Yep, you heard it right, it's all I can do to keep my babies from eating dog poop!

It's only the old dried up crumbled, smushed into the ground dog poop they seem to love. When I have them outside and see them actually stopped and eating I know I better get over there and move em'.

Yes I know that it's probably not good for them and I do keep them from eating it, but they always seem to sneak a few bites before I catch them. What is it in the poop that you think they like? It's like the love of dogs to get into the cat litter box or eat the horse poop!

I suppose animals will be animals:rolleyes:

It is not good for torts to eat dog feces. It is nutritionally bad for them and bacteriologically potentially dangerous for them. Also, if your dogs are on certain medications or heartworm preventatives, that poop could kill your tortoise.

You need to keep the dogs out of the tortoise area or the tortoises out of the dogs area. Please. For the sake of your tortoises health...

they might be lacking something in thier diet.. calcium, minerals..
Clean up the yard, keep them seperate.. and find a good supplement for them. also provide a Cuttle bone for calcium.

Its just good animal management to clean up poop daily. Every morning I go out to the barn and pick up horse poop. Later in the day when I feed the dog, I take the shovel and rake and clean up dog poop. As I'm going around to the different tortoise yards checking on all the inhabitants, I carry the scoop with me and pick up tortoise poop. This is a habit you all need to get into. When a grazing animal eats the grass around any kind of poop, he may also be ingesting the parasite eggs that were pooped out. Doesn't matter if its his own poop or not. He'll be reinfesting himself every time he eats near poop.

So, besides the fact that cat and dog poop isn't good for tortoises, it could be downright deadly to them.

Clean up the poop!!!

When I first got Jack, I had him in my back yard with all the dogs, (yes yes I know, stupid stupid, luckly I learned up as I grew up!!) But he , I swear would watch a dog poop, then go running over! It was a race to see who could get to it first!. Now my torts have a very large yard all to themselves! But I do remember, he loved it! YUK!

well my dog does not have access to my tortoise area, and if he does walk in there with me, it gets picked up as soon as he does his business. I will say a cat likes to poop in my red foot enclosure ( a stray) but he never seems to go after it.

Wow, sounds like some of you don't think I take care of my animals! I give my babies their vitamins and calcium and cuttle bone, etc etc etc. No I don't put them in the poop intentionally or serve it up on a platter. Yes I know it's bad for them as I suggested in my first post. Really I'm not that stupid. It's kinda hard to clean up everything when you have unfenced acres that dogs come on. I would have to quit work and monitor my 15 acres for animal poop. I take them out myself and stay with them. I have found an area where there is no poop (for now) but they do tend to move fast. Hence the chasing around and bringing them back. When they get bigger I will build an enclosure. I really don't think they are lacking in anything. They eat poop because they are animals! I think I learned my lesson for posting stuff that was supposed to be just a funny thing about dog poop and their taste buds.....

I once read that it's not uncommon for African torts to eat hyena droppings in the wild.

Thanks, it's not that much of a different story. Interesting to know they do it in the wild also.
