Just wanted to introduce myself here, my name is Laurie I am 27 yrs old from Boca Raton, Fl. I currently have 2 tortoises: a Russian Tortoise and a Leopard Tortoise. I am unsure how old my Russian is as I found him making a home for himself under a bush in my front yard. I was pretty sure he wouldn't do so well on his own so I took him in. I have had him for almost a year. His primary caregiver is my younger sister (who is 25) I just keep a close eye. I have been wanting my own tortoise, so today I purchased a baby from a local reptile store, that is the Leopard Tortoise. I have been spending my weekend so far researching as much as I can about the finer details of keeping Leopards, but he (until I can tell him or her it's him hah) is joining a mini-zoo of 20 other critters in my care which include 3 dogs, 2 cats, 5 chinchillas, 3 hedgehogs, a bird, western hognose snake, tiger salamander, a pair of whites tree frogs and southern flying squirrels. Anyways, I am going to get back to reading. :)

Hi Laurie:

Welcome to the forum!!

You live in a great place climate-wise, for having a mini zoo!

Hello and welcome. I've got a few leopards myself.

These are my two torties....

One thing I am unsure about is if the Russian has a longer then normal beak, should I look into trimming it?

I also noticed when I feed the baby Leopard when I got home from work this morning he seems to not be able to rip apart the spring mix (sans spinach) very well. I diced a few leaves from the spring mix with some kale, is there a more preferred "hatchling friendly" mix of greens I should use? Is the baby too young to be introduced to cactus pears as well? Oddly, my Caique LOVES this fruit so I tend to always have some on-hand.

Yes, the Russian's beak needs to be filed down.

I chop up the greens into very tiny pieces for new to 6 months babies. Then I gradually chop them up less small until finally around a year old I'm not chopping at all. With cactus, you have to cut an edge for them to bite. They can't bite the cactus that is whole.
