I have had Herbert (herbie) for around 2 weeks now. I placed a small bit of wadding in his home until the slate arrived for him to bask in.

I am new to tortoise keeping, he is my first, however he doesn’t sit or sleep on the slate, but always goes to the wadding. After food or a wonder, he will sit on the slate for a bit, then back to the wadding.
So much so, Iv left the wadding in there.

I don’t think it will do him harm, but I can’t find anywhere that this is normal?

Hello who said tortoises are or have to be normal ?. It could be just his spot in the enclosure that he likes. If that's not why and he actually just likes a blanky, ?the only problems I can think of would be if he tries to chew it, his toenails get caught in it, or you can't keep it clean enough. He will pee on it because they do pee and stuff where they sleep. Pet shops carry a soap specifically for terrariums made by zoo med called Wipe Out that you can clean terrarium cloth with..?

What is this "wadding"? What is it made up of? What are the conditions in the enclosure apart from the "wadding"?
Maybe it seems nice and cuddly, but I don't think it's needed either and as Tom said, could cause a problem.
I would not have it in my tortoise enclosure. It could choke him to death or get stuck in his gut, etc. etc. or get moldy or suffocate him....etc. etc.

Hi Tammy,

wadding is 100% cotton, usually placed in quilts for warmth.
I have not seen him eat it. He currently is only slightly larger than a coin.

Thank you cathie! I think your right when he gets larger could get his nails caught. I certainly will wash it frequently. Maybe it’s just a phase!

Hi, best substrate is orchid bark fine have a look at swell reptile in UK they deliver. 20kg bag will work as you can get a nice deep substrate and it lasts a while. Use the slate under the heat lamp for basking. Wadding not good they poo and wee and soon it will be very dirty or a hazard .

Please read this care sheet and ask questions. There are breeders onhere so advise is genuine and from experience.

Providing the correct environment will give him and you years of fun and good health.

Impaction, strangulation, loss of limbs when the fibers unravel and wrap around the legs, entanglement...
That sounds awful

I would sincerely hope that nobody would leave a tortoise that long without checking on them that they are ok?

Seeing as you are commenting on my post and that sort of reaction, almost implies You think I could allow that to happen?

i fully understand the warning here, the tortoise at the end of the day is the priority. However your comments and lack or car is really poor Tom.

I have looked through your posts and comments, you show lack or remorse, care, blunt messages. I am new to this forum, and your replies seem frequent to be negative and uncalled for.

i suggest to you, a softer approach. As a 10 year member it looks like, perhaps kinder advice and less abrupt to new owners that love their new friends and only seek advice would go further.

I'm not here to hold your hand and make you feel warm and fuzzy. Nor am I here to insult you or make you feel bad. You asked a question of me and I answered it. Just speaking plain English. Nothing more.

Do you think anyone would allow those things to happen? Nobody intends for those things to happen. In fact its quite the opposite. Nobody thinks it will happen, but it does. That is why I took the time to warn you, and recommend you remove it BEFORE it causes a problem and you learn this lesson the hard way. There are a lot of three legged reptile walking around in the world because people didn't think that letting them walk around on carpet or giving them a blanket could do harm. Now they know, but its too late.

My answers are sometimes short because I am short on time. When I see a potential problem, I want to help a person avoid it. I don't always have time for flowery language and sugary sweet comments. Most of the time I just say it bluntly and to the point. People can take it or leave it.

Another view is that it is fun to make it as close to their natural environment with hiding, low climbing areas so substrate, rocks, wood and plants will make it feel safe and provide it a nice looking enclosure.

If you post pics of the whole of your enclosure you'll get good feedback to make sure it is as safe as possible for your baby. There's often things we think are good ideas but could actually be a danger to torts - many of us have done that and had to make changes.
There have been posts about torts eating socks and other soft materials as well as metals I suppose because they explore things with their noses and mouths. Unfortunately it could only take a few seconds when they are not being watched for disaster to strike and blockages in the gut to develop which are very painful and can be fatal, or he could choke to death.
When I have put my tort on a towel while changing his soak water I have caught him trying to bite it so I would remove the wadding asap if you haven't already done so. He may be small but he can still take little bites.
They have hard shells so don't really need soft, cuddly things.
He may use the slate more to bask on under his lamp.

#Charlotte Tom is an excellent source of info. If it weren’t for him and other fine folks in this great forum my Indian Star tortoise ? may not have survived without their guidance.

@Charlotteandherbert , it is best you remove the wadding as mentioned above, and also as mentioned above, Orchid bark, or CoCo coir would be a much better substrate for your lil tort.
Please don't be turned off by some comments made here.
We ONLY have the best interests of your lil tort at heart.
Read over the care guide provided, it will answer many questions and give you more questions to ask.
And Welcome to the Forum.

I have taken advice! Wadding removed.

day 1) herbie avoided the area and slate
Day 3) put a flannel there instead
Day4) doesn’t use flannel or slate and does not go in the area at all now

he must have really liked the wadding….any advice?
