Not recommended unless it's a dedicated space due to the possibility of accidental ingestion of loose items. The other issue is the cleanup! My Leopard scares me with his poop. Also depending on the size of the tort you can get property damage
And what if he starts chewing on his underwear?? Oh, my!! Oh, erase, erase, erase...no tort is that flexible!!

Found this photo with a tort in depends. Is this really doable? Would like to offer ours a bit of free range in our home.

No. Not doable. It is not safe for a number of reasons, and unless you have heated floors set to 80+, its also too cold.

I know that the "Pro Tip" is to not let your little guy free roam for some very good reasons......but for many years, before I knew some of the more valid reasons, Clemson had run of my home. It's relatively easy to Sulc-proof your home but it isn't natural for them at all....gate the steps, remove the safety covers from receptacles, remove every piece of glass outside the kitchen that you own(ed), ANY lamp, cords. etc.....but then they will teach you how poor of a job you did when they wedge themselves behind the sofa or in Clemson's case, would butt up against and move my furniture all over!

I was cool with it but I sure wouldn't have done it with kids still at home.....

LOL...good luck with it if you decide to go that way.......guaranteed to scare the crud out of you some morning!

? do you have a big bath tub with a big drain dedicated for the stuck on mess? It would be easier to just potty train them to the garden ?

I let mine roam the Sun room when it’s chilly out. Course it’s open to the rest of the house, so he goes on walkabout. Then I tell the dogs to go find him for me! And they always do - tucked into a warm corner somewhere. So far he hasn’t pooped in the house, but maybe I’ve just been lucky. As I have Depends in the house I just might give that a try. Brilliant idea!

You're asking for trouble allowing him roam the house on the floor. There are many, many horror stories of what happened to pet tortoises that were free roaming in the house. One such story was about a little sulcata that had his head behind a door, in between the door and the frame of the door. The keeper closed the door, not knowing the tortoise was there, and squished his head, killing him.

That would be AWSOME! My baby Eastern Box poops in her pond AND SHE PEES ON ME!

I tried to put a mask on her to prevent Covid. Did not work out well at all! (Sarcasm).
