I have my red foot tortoise for 6 months now & he/she is very healthy as far as I can see, I don't know his/her exact age or sex & I suspect it's what is described as a yearling. I noticed as my tort has more than doubled it's size & weight since he/she came home & it frequently rubs his/her carapace against stones, metal objects & wood, the carapace has become rougher & sharper to the touch then when it was younger & I hope it's not pyramiding because my tort get outdoor sunlight 3-4 days per week for at least one hour each session calcium with D3 supplement & cuttlefish bones to bite on. Is the rubbing to remove parasites or something torts just does?

It could be parasites.
It could be normal.
Mine like to rub themselves. But not to the point of damaging their shells.
Also, sunlight or lack of it doesn't cause pyramiding.
Lack of humidity does.
You need very high humidity.

My redfoot likes to rub her butt on plants and corners, but hasn't cause any damage either.
Maybe give it something slightly softer it can rub on like a bristle brush?

Thank you, I guess tort's rub because their shells are very hard & needs something equally or harder to feel the sensation. I pet my red foot on the head & also his/her shell...
