why do you have 2 identical posts going? I responded to the other one:

And... this would not be a vitamin A deficiency. First only affecting one eye. But most importantly with leafy greens loaded with vit A tortoises extremely rarely will have a vit A deficiency unless they have a terrible diet. Aquatic turtles have this issue very commonly with a Vit A deficiency because of their carnivorous/insectivorous diets and reluctance to eat greens. So even some vets jump to the Vit A deficiency with tortoises and it is totally unfounded.
It was an accident my phone said it had an error posting

The coil type smh I had no idea :-( what kind do you guys recommend?
what is the brand and type of bulb. Brand name and "forest" or Desert" or 5.0 or 10.0, etc.

And where did you have it? How close to the tortoise. We would like to know if this was the problem.

Thank you,

Its a zoomed set up so the double dome light with a zoo med uva and a zoo med uvb
The uva is a 10 w and the uvb is 15
He has the basking set up over the left zide of his terranium with the uvb over the middle and his basking spot and water dish to the far right.
The lights are at least 12 inches away as they sit right on top of the enclosure
The temperature under the basking is usually around 95 and in his hiding spot about 80
I also try to keep humidity around 65-80 all the time

My little redfoot had one eye that it was reluctant to open....looked a little swollen. Off to the vet we went. Turned out she had corneal edema from trauma. The vet guessed it had bumped the eye on something or scratched it with it's foot. I think a tortoise reluctant to open their eye could be from a number of different reasons. Mine was prescribed some medication and has been fine for the past 18 months.

"I suspect your sulcata tortoise can't -- not won't -- open his eyes. Eyelids swollen shut are often a result of vitamin A deficiency. The liver stores vitamin A in the hatchling. As the body uses it up, the hatchling tortoise may show signs of hypovitaminosis A if the nutrient is not replenished in the diet."-- Reptiles Magazine
Could this be the cause?
I bought a bottle of vitamin A and have used it on my aquatic turtles before, I am wondering if I can soak my turtles- not tortoise- in carrot baby food? Will their shells absorb vitamin A this way? I’m just curious - because I have one that I think might enjoy it! - she’s an odd girl lol. Any who, you can buy flucker’s liquid vitamin for around $10 bucks - it’ll last forever- you just put a drop in its mouth - just follow the instructions

How much does your little guy weigh? I don't know much about hatchling failure syndrome other than that they can't get much past the 50 gram mark.
