Please can someone shed some light on why my 15yr old Russian horsfield, who usually does nothing more than amble about, suddenly started running around mad & was scratching in his bed until after 10pm last night even though his light was out at 7.30pm. I've not even had him a year yet and he's never behaved this way before and if it was a strop it was a huge one!!

I have no idea.
Russians are one of the most mobile and active tortoises.
I do not keep them.
Someone with more experience with this species will be along soon.

I also don't keep Russians.
I have a CA desert tortoise, and I've only seen him really run one time. A large number of ants were viciously attacking him!
True, he was in his outdoor enclosure, but is there any chance something was biting or stinging him?
And, what's a "strop"? ;)

A strop is a huff, spat the dummy out lol. There was nothing chasing him @ the ants here wouldn't bother him.

Did anything change? Is your house & tort’s room much colder or warmer or more forced air coming inside from your furnace? Russians allegedly have a keen sense of barometric pressure changing with arrival of big storms. Cold front coming your way soon?

Restless Tort Syndrome!

Good luck

I don't think it's the weather, he has already noticed it's winter & goes deeper into his bedding now. I did give his shell a bit of a scratch with my finger nails just prior to his sudden forcefulness when running about & depositing little puddles of whatever while doing so. Maybe Leo wants to show who's boss lol. Thanks for replying.

So, he's peeing or losing some type of liquid as he walks?
