My three toe box turtle yard is quite large and overgrown, and is shaded on three sides, but the 'open' side is on the north, and the orientation of the earth doesn't allow the sun to shine in on that side, and because of the shady other sides, no sun there either. Just about lunch time the sun has creeped over to shine between the barn and the shed, allowing the turtles a sliver of sun for just an hour or so:

Notice the little black one. He's my favorite. He's a very small, full grown male three toe, and very tame. I love his black carapace. He's the only one I've ever seen that color. Before any of you sharp-eyed creatures comment of the Florida box turtle in with the three toes, I only have male Floridas, and the largest of them has figured out how to climb over the dividing fences (yes, there are TWO fences he has to climb over) to get in with the female three toes. I have to put him back home at least once a day.

Since I no longer do turtle rescue, the population won't grow any larger. There are about 25 or 30 of them in here. And when people ask to adopt box turtles, I let them choose from this yard. There are several I will never adopt out, the little black being one of them.

Haha. This time if year when the sun starts getting low my enclosure does the same and my three toeds do the same. They soak in that sun when they can. They also dont mind a lot of shade so it's a win win. Great looking group, box turtles are one of my favorites.

Honestly, my favorite thing in there is the gnarled old tree, which adds so much character. Makes the whole thing take on a "fairy tale" persona...of course, the turtles are splendid, as well.

Do you have any more pictures of the entire enclosure? I'm super curious to see how it looks!
Here's one I took a couple years ago when a big branch broke off that "gnarled old tree."

And here's one showing replacing the grape stakes with a regular wood fence:

And here's some I took especially for you, just a few minutes ago:

It would have been better to have shown some turtles in the pictures but it's early and it was sort of cold last night. They're all still hiding.

Awesome! What do you use for the water in the 3-Toed enclosure?

Do you have place for them that's covered? what about predators. I lost one of my turtles to a critter and now I'm terrified to leave my other TTBT out over night. I let him roam outside during the day when I'm home so I can watch over my little guy.

No, it's all open and vermin accessible. Occasionally I find opossum poop in the box turtle waterers, and one time I had a marauding raccoon. The raccoon killed two turtles one night, then two more the following night. The worst part of it was she didn't eat them, just killed them and tore them apart. I set a hav-a-heart trap using all the dead shells as bait and caught her. She was VERY pregnant. My next door neighbor took her way out in the country and released her by a stream. I see coyotes running down my street if I'm out before the sun is up. I think the fact that I have a very large dog who has pooped and pee'd all over my whole property must deter the night time hunters off my property.

Do you over winter your turtles outside? Being as we have almost the same winter I'm interested to see what you do
Yes. Their yard is very big, and there are twenty or thirty of them in there. I'd never be able to find them all.

When the leaves drop I gather them from all over my property and pile them up on the the two areas where the turtles have dug in. There's over two feet of cover for them. I spread more leaves over their whole yard to make sure I've covered any stragglers.
