I’m setting up my large indoor enclosures for the winter for my 2 Russians and making improvements on last years set-up. I’ve been using 65 watt flood lights for heat but I’m wondering if I could use a higher wattage bulb and place it further away. The advantage would be a larger basking area and more light. The enclosure where I want to do this is 7.5ft x 5.5ft so there’s plenty of cool space. It’s also open top so plenty of overhead space. Anyone see any problems with this idea? I figured I’d ask those with years of experience rather than trial and error my way through! Thanks.

if you want to increase the foot print of the area heated/lighted, I have used more bulbs in an array. I use radiant heat panels these days, but when I used light bulbs that what I did. If any one bulb goes out, you still have a heated lighted area.

We did this with 250 watt heat bulbs for Galops at two different zoos. It spreads the 'contact' area out.

Yeah that’s just what I wanna do. Last year each tort had two basking lamps but with 65w bulbs they had to be low and they created 2 separate “hotspots” near each other. I’m hoping to create one large basking area or footprint as you say, with the same 2 lamps just higher wattage and hung higher. I do like having the 2 lamps for when a bulb blows.
