I got 4" pots of three different types of bamboo:
  1. A dwarf, tight-clumping, bamboo
  2. A variegated green/white bamboo
  3. A giant bamboo
All three are supposed to be viable in my locale, so I'm going to try splitting each one to plant outdoors and also pot inside.

My hope is to grow enough inside and outside to feed Aretha and maybe my other tortoises, if they like it...

Just in case surround them with something there roots can’t grow through. I got one neighbor that puts out cut stalks twice a year from just a couple of plants from many years ago

I cannot get my tortoises to eat MAzuri............how do you get yours to eat it???? I have tried everything, mashing it with the greens, wetting it and smearing it on the greens, any suggestions?

That’s a beautiful baby Jamie! I’m excited for you and can’t wait to see her progress.. I missed that you had gotten a Russian so now I’m going to look him up. That’s a nice habitat for Aretha too!

I guess I've been lucky... I simply wet it a little and they all seem to love it.

Thanks, I'm loving getting to know these torts from different parts of the world... feels like one from Africa is the next logical step, but finding room for them will be a challenge.

Aretha enjoyed a huge breakfast while soaking today...

  • Mazuri
  • Zilla omnivore mix
  • A sprinkle of my homemade supplement, a 50:50 mix of dried hibiscus flowers and wakame seaweed, ground to powder
She let loose with a poop nearly as long as her shell while soaking and must have made room for the meal.

She seems to enjoy hiding amongst (and nibbling) the maple leaves/branches I've been rotating through her enclosure and hiding much of the day in there, balanced against an hour or two of basking at the edge of the light at the warm end.

Couldn't agree more... There is something special about her for sure.

Congratulations, You made a great choice on getting a member of the manoria family. Now all you need is a Brown and an Impressa. just kidding. I got my first Black in 1996 at the same time I picked up Walker .He and another male I picked up a couple years later are now in Florida with Vic along with a pair of browns that I raised.. He needed males for breeding so I sent them to him. Some food items that I fed were cooked sweet potato, mushrooms, opuntia, leaves and stems from colocasia, alocasia and malanga plants, The malanga is a new world elephant ear plant from the tropics. Enjoy raising your new Baby.
