Hey guys, does anyone have any names of edible water plants for let's say a snapper? And or any other water turtle? My little guy does not and I repeat does not like fresh lettuce out of the garden.. he refused it.. pretty much turned his nose up to it lol. I am not very savy with names of plants and such. So if anyone could help me try to find him a source of greens he will eat I would greatly appreciate it. ( He would to; he just doesn't know it yet) he eats a variety of everything. I have minnows in with him and crawfish had tadpoles ( he ate them all) [emoji52] theres a few little pieces of clean moss in there to ( he just takes it to sleep on.) At the beginning of this summer I was in the swamps up here getting him minnows and tadpoles and weeds and I wound up in the er for 4 days because I got sepsis some how. First it started as a parasite that the doctors didn't catch and I wound up almost dying, my body was starting to shut down because of it. So I would greatly like to know if I can purchase like duck weed or aquatic plants instead of getting them myself? Sounds stupid but I won't step foot in the water again this year.. this is Minnesota mind you..

Understand. Doesn't sound silly at all to me. You've been through more than enough weird stuff for one year. :) There should be good sources of duckweed and anacharis available online. You might be able to get a local nursery or local pet/fish store to special order them for you. I haven't ordered any online, but we definitely have some commercial scale aquatic plant producers in Florida.

I've never seen duckweed for sale at Petco or Petsmart, but I have seen them carry anacharis, off and on. I've purchased anacharis from both, but I think the bunches from Petco were nicer. It's been thriving in my mud turtle tank. My gut feeling is that it's going to be easier to find anacharis in stores seasonally (probably spring), but I think Petco (more likely?) may be willing to order some for you.

Oh thank you very much. I will definitely be checking to see if the do or can order some for me. Yes I've had enough weird stuff for the year. Maybe next year lol.

GOOD HEAVENS!!!![emoji33][emoji33][emoji33]
SO GLAD that you're alright!!!!![emoji173]️
I don't blame you: I wouldn't want to set foot in the water again after something like that!

Gosh: Minnesota??!?! That surprises me. We get crazy stuff in our lakes and streams down here, but Louisiana is subtropical, so we sort of expect it.

Most aquatic turtles (and definately snappers) as hatchlings and yearlings, are almost exclusively carnivorous/insectivorous. Don't worry if they ignore plants. They will start to nibble if there is not enough of their preferred foods available. I would suggest you also start to use a pellet food for the better vitamin/mineral balance.

That makes sense. He seems to completely ignore all plants I try to give him. He would rather sleep on them lol. And oh yes he loves turtle pellets. I buy reptomin from Walmart also he eats tons of dried crickets. [emoji4] Thank you

That sounds like a terrible thing to get! So sorry to hear that.

People don't realize that MN can get pretty hot in the summer! My painted turtles, if they had it their way, are mostly carnivorous. What I do to trick them is I have a 1 cup little food processor, and I put a mixture of romaine, carrot sticks and either butternut squash chunks or sweet potato chunks, or whatever you would like for veggies, in the little food processor and grind them up really small. I feed all of my turtles in dish pans. So I sprinkle the bloodworms, fish, etc. in the container, then I sprinkle the food processed veggies over the fish, etc. When my turtles go to chomp on the fish or beef heart or whatever, they can't help but get some veggies in with it.

Give it a try. It works for me. You can get the little food chopper at Walmart dirt cheap. I get the matchstick carrots at Walmart, they are easier to grind up. I get the chunked squash and sweet potatoes at Cub. Put whatever you want in there.

Good Luck!

Thank you! Yes Minnesota does get very hot in the summer as well as down right frigid in the winter.. I will definitely try that! Elvis doesn't seem to like anything but his pellets and crickets. I got him to take a bite of romaine hearts the other day I tricked him [emoji23] I have tried cucumbers and toms of other veggies also tried a piece of banana, he didn't seem to like that either. He seems like he is growing good now, he's shedding right now so he's been a grouch. When he starts shedding he sleeps in the sand alot. Maybe he's growing too. Thank you again for your advice! I will try that! [emoji3526]

You can find pretty much any aquatic plants you want on eBay. I've ordered several, water lettuce, Hyacinth, anarchis, duckweed, you name it is on there.
