He hatched 6 years ago, weighing between 3 and 4 grams.I kept him awake and inside the first winter. When the weather warmed the next spring he moved outside and has been there since. He's not setting any speed records on growth, but doing just fine.IMG_0010 copy 2.jpg sm box turtle.jpg Picture 1956.jpg Picture 1958.jpg Picture 1969.jpg Picture 1971.jpg

Tiny is 8 years old and still small. I'm not sure he will ever reach normal adult size. When I went out this morning to fill a bird feeder i saw him busy with his head down working on something I took a pic and let him finish whatever he was doing.Picture 001.jpgLater i went to find him to get some more pics. He looks good and has a nice weight,Just smallPicture 010.jpg Picture 011.jpg Picture 012.jpgAfter I had put him down I noticed a much younger female behind me that is almost as big as Tiny already.Picture 015.female.jpg

What a beauty [emoji4] did you hatch him yourself? I'll go look farther back on your threads.
Most of the hatchlings hatch out naturally in the yard without my help. but sometimes I will get some and incubate them inside. At the moment I don't remember where Tiny hatched, but it was here at the Beach. Some I don't find until a couple years later. The last two I found were in the front yard while I was weeding and I just left them be. They are now to large to reenter the back yard but both looked great and seem to be doing fine on their own.

Oh that's so cool. I'm sure it's just as cool as incubating them yourself. I myself have never seen a nest hatch out of the ground. Tiny is certainly a cutie [emoji7]

Many years ago I stumbled onto a three toed hatchling emerging from a nest I had seen 6 weeks earlier when the female deposited her eggs. I had forgotten about it and was rather startled to see a young one taking his first peek into the world...

Tiny is awake and I decided to turn him loose into the big yard this year. He will turn 9 years old in a few months and is only 4 and 3/4 inches in length. Here is a pic of Rocket welcoming him to the yard.Picture 001.jpgDon't worry Rocket wont harm Tiny or any turtle or tortoise hatchling or adult.

You certainly did a nice job of raising him up. He looks great!

I once had a desert box turtle in my backyard. It lived with us for years. We found him just wandering around one day in the back. Never tried to keep him contained, he just liked us. We even went to the local garden nursery and bought a pack of garden earthworms and put them in the garden. He was in turtle heaven. During the winter, he'd bury under the AC system. The following spring, we'd see him out and about in between the veggies we'd plant. When all our neighbors were having grasshopper issues, we'd be just fine. He voraciously ate anything in the garden.
