About to dive in

Hi! I’m Sherrie and my 9 year old daughter has wanted a Russian Tortoise for more than a year. We have friends whose son has had one for about five years. Dad built a habitat with two levels and a ramp, and now we are ready. She has done a lot of research as have I. Honestly I didn’t realize how much it would take to care for a tortoise. Just visited friends in CA with a large desert tortoise as a pet. It really reinvigorated our desire to move forward, though theirs is very different than what ours will be.

We were going to purchase from Russian-tortoise.com but didn’t see anything in my vendor search on this page. I think waiting for the infamous Carol S’ next batch might make more sense but I can’t comment.

Glad we found this resource! I had 30 minutes to stop on tonight and I’ve already spent 60 reading!

I looked up that site. I don't know who it is or what their experience level is, but the info given is pretty vague and general. The substrate advice is terrible and will likely lead to trouble if followed. It also says nothing about if they are breeding their own or selling them from other sources, or how babies are started. I wouldn't buy from that site without knowing a lot more.

Definitely wait for a baby from Carol. I've personally bought 6 of her babies and all of them were fantastic and perfectly cared for in every way. I give her an A+ only because and A++++++++ would just be getting silly.

I think Russiantortoise.com is Joe Heinen. He's been raising tortoises for a very long time. He has several groups on Yahoogroups.com - sulcata, leopard and russian. I don't know how he raises his babies, but he has a whole lot of experience.
