I recently moved my two young redfoots outside and when i went to give them a bath today I noticed something on the top of Philip(my older redfoot)’s shell. The last time i noticed something on one of my tortoises shells they had a rare blood disease and died so I’m a little nervous IMG_3729.jpg

Hello!

This is an interesting one. It almost appears to be a burn, but I'm not sure. It could also be some form of infection. I will let someone with more redfoot experience take over.

What are its basking temperatures? Do you know anything more about the rare blood disease your other tortoise got? Before you went to soak your tortoise (I'm assuming this was recently?) you didn't notice anything like this on its shell?

I'm assuming the rare blood disease was a form of septicemia, or a blood infection caused by some species of bacteria.

Yes it was septicemia. That was about 3 years before i got either of them. They dont have any lights because they live outside but i do live in Florida where it gets pretty hot. I do have lots of shady areas for them though. Im thinking it could be scraping from the slate hide i had in their enclosure since he’s taller than my other redfoot.

Sorry. Can’t help.

It doesn’t look like rubbing to me. The light coloured area around the areola looks to be thinning. Also some of the coastal scutecare that colour in the centre of the areola.
I would get to a vet ASAP.

Its possible that I can't see enough detail on my phone screen.
Do you have a good vet that you can visit?
It looks like an abrasion to me. But I cant view the area very well.
Better to be safe.

Thank you all for the advice! I’m almost certain that it is a mechanical abrasion. I had a large piece of slate in the enclosure that i propped up as a hide but my small tortoise likes to nock down and dig under it. I would often find both of them under the hide and Philip(the affected one) is significantly larger which explains why the mark is at the highest point of his shell. I took the slate out today and replaced it with a much safer hide.
