Atlas is very small yet, but I am wondering about the merits of having them microchipped.

Here we have no legal obligation to do so- however tortoises where I live are:

1)expensive (very very much compared to the USA)
2)very very uncommon

I have ownership papers from the breeder, and aside from an eventual outside enclosure for days during our rather short summer, Atlas will be kept inside. I am also planning on taking yearly photographs of plastron and carapace markings, and measurements in order to help identify them if they ever became lost or stolen.

I am wondering if having Atlas microchipped would be a good idea to prove ownership and have them returned if anything was to happen? I would probably have to escort Atlas on a 3 hour road trip to have him chipped, but willing to do it.

Picture for cute tortoise tax.

Very worth it. It's not so much theft prevention as it is proof of ownership. If your tort is grabbed and someone tries to sell it, you hold proof of ownership. Absolutely the reason I chipped Frankie. Peace of mind.

What is the best size to get a microchip implanted? Atlas is still a teeny 2in hatchling.

Frankie was about five when we got him a microchip. By five he had already escaped the yard twice so we were motivated.

Hatchlings are too small, I'd say but defiantly worth getting a good vet...also piece of mind before you desperately need one.
