I have a baby sulcata and am building him a closed chamber to last a while. It will be 8x4x4. Im concerned about the basking area temp. At 48 inches tall, would it be impossible to have a basking area around 95 degrees because the bulb would be about 40 inches from the basking spot? It would be mounted to the top I assume or i could make it less tall... but how much?

I find 24" to be a good height for a closed chamber. I wouldn't go over 30".

Even in a 48" tall enclosure, you simply hang the light fixture at the correct basking height for your tortoise.

I can't wait to see what you make! Post lots of pics! :)

You might consider a muffin fan for such a large air volume, that way ambient will be less stratified. Plus it into a dimmer switch for easy speed control.

As Tom suggests, it's about the temp at the tortoise level, so adjust the heat source up or down based on the resulting temp you get at the tortoise basking spot.
