Is the back hard side of a cuttle bone safe for Opo to eat? If not what is the best way to remove?
Thanks I have the understanding that the hard coating is water soluble. So I figured Opo would digest it ok. Opo is the same way. Most of the time he could care less about the cuttle bone but then there are other times he won't leave it alone until it's gone.I leave them whole.
My Redfoot don't generally touch them for the most part. So I replace them every few months.
Every now and then I'll find that one or more has been eaten.
Why they do and then dont eat it is a mystery to me, but is probably linked to egg producing
That's a good idea! We get our eggs from a friend. The chickens are chemical free.
What is your method of removing it?I remove the hard backing first before I give it to my turtles/Tortoises.
I soak it in hot water about 30 minutes then chip it off with a knife. Soaking it seems to help it come off easier. I didn't remove it one time and one of my turtles cut his mouth and was bleeding from it. So now I always remove it.What is your method of removing it?
Thanks between you and Lyn W the knife method sounds like the way to go.I soak it in hot water about 30 minutes then chip it off with a knife. Soaking it seems to help it come off easier. I didn't remove it one time and one of my turtles cut his mouth and was bleeding from it. So now I always remove it.
I use crushed egg shells for my Tortoises too. I do that every couple weeks. Thanks between you and Lyn W the knife method sounds like the way to go.
I am going to try Grandpa Turtles idea also.
