Hi all ! I have an 8 yr old Russian. Is Komodo Reptile complete diet ok to feed him. The Facebook forum that I’m on says no because of too much sugar. I say yes. They suspended me by the way. Any thoughts? You all seem to know a lot more info then they do. Thank you. From Dennis” mom Lynnee

I've heard a lot of tortoise folk in the UK say they use the Komodo dragon food for tortoises. It's supposed to be a good substitute for our Mazuri Tortoise Diet, which isn't available in the UK.

You use the Mazuri sparingly or could it be used daily mixed w greens?

You can use it daily mixed in with greens, but most of us use it two or three times a week.

I’m a twice a week Mazuri treat type myself. All prepackaged diets are full of sugar and fillers much like human prepackaged food. I think it’s fine as part of a balanced diet but not as a stand-alone.

You were suspended for arguing?
We argue all the time here.
Avoid as much sugar as you can for any species other than Redfoot and Yellowfoot.

have you heard of that diet? I was suspended for saying 100% organic cypress mulch was an ok substrate.

I am in The UK used Komodo for many years without problems. It must be well-softened in plain tap water before feeding. Never feed dry. Komodo suggest you could soften in fruit juice, but Russians cannot tolerate the sugars in fruit.

Mazuri can be bought in the UK from the Shelled Warriors Shop

Personally, I am not comfortable with using only a pelleted food. I used it as a supplement when weeds were scarcest. Most of the year, apart from when Joe hibernated of course, he ate weeds occasionally supplemented with supermarket greens.

The Tortoise Table Plant Database is a fabulous online resource where you can search for things that grow around you and those that you buy in the supermarket and find out their suitability to feed and why.

No. Never.
But I keep Redfoot. They are much easier to feed because they eat almost anything.
