Personally I wouldn't put any oils, even natural and organic stuff, on the shells of tortoises - on the basis that it only collects dust and clogs up the surface, and also that it isn't natural! If I want them to look shiny, or to show off their colours to a visitor, I might spray them with water - as long as they can dry off before bedtime.

As for feeding horsfields, beware of over-feeding. In the wild they're only active for about three months of the year, and range widely to find food in that time-slot. In captivity they'll continue to be opportunistic feeders, so it's easy for them to eat too much, and they're likely to be awake and feeding for more than three months per annum. I've got a rescued horsfeld that was clearly fed either too much of the right stuff, or possibly too much of the wrong stuff - calcium-deficient foodstuffs I would guess, and his carapace is consequently very distorted. Sad.

Yes, that's why I always admonish users to polish it off with a clean absorbent cloth after application. You're correct. If it is left on without polishing it will collect dirt and make it hard for the tortoise to thermoregulate.

P.s When I first had my tort I was told to think of his shell as an upturned bowl and feed him enough to fill it.
Then If he wanted more give him more and if he left some ,feed less, let the tort be your guide.
Have you read the caresheet for your species of tort?
That will tell you all about diet etc.

Hi again Jamie , I would put a little bit more food in for her.
What sort of tort is she, how old is she and what are you feeding her?

I just copied my reply from the other thread in case you hadn't seen it.

Looks like your posts from the other thread and this have been merged by a moderator Jamie and put back in the wrong thread in case you are wondering what's happened. I'll try to sort it out.

What's the benefit of putting oil on your tortoise back? I haven't heard about that before. If it would be beneficial to my sulcata I will do it and wipe off before he gets back into the dirt. Just curious since I have not heard about oiling a tortoise.

Betsy looks lovely Jamie.
I hope you don't mind me saying but that water dish is too small and steep for her.
Pet shops often sell expensive and unsuitable equipment for the profit.
A shallow terracotta plant saucer (big enough for her to soak in) and sunk it so that it is level with the substrate would be much easier for Betsy.
She could also do with a bigger enclosure now so that she has more space to wander.
Have a look at the caresheet that will really help you keep Betsy happy and healthy.

The plant saucers are only cheap, my tort loves to self soak in his

That's great if you have the room outside to give her more space for the warmer weather, they need to wander and its good for digestion.
(Not recommended indoors though)
It's difficult to judge the size of torts in pictures but the recommended minimum enclosure size is 4 x 8.
It is a very nicely decorated viv but you could free up more floor space for her by taking out the stones perhaps and maybe putting in a little barrier of some sort that she can walk around. Have a look at the enclosures thread for ideas.

I went to university in Birmingham - not far from Bromsgrove and have friends that live there too I think it's an area called Marlbrook.
I live in South Wales.

My little Russian eats good too. He usually eats midmorning or when I go in to feed him. Look up care for a Russian but always remember that their nickname is escape artist. Have fun outsmarting the little darling. If she eats everything put out some more. I don't feed him in the evening. He's ready for bed at 5 or 6 pm. They are a vegan.
