So, I've had a tortoise before, years ago, a little Russian old man named Sam. [emoji3590]
He was a rescue from a bad situation and we had him for 6 years before he passed away. I said I'd never have another because I got so attached and it broke my heart to lose him. (He was estimated at 20y when I brought him home)
Well, yesterday, while picking up my typically massive amounts of reptile foods (crickets, pinkies, hornworms, dubias, mealies) I saw they had a red footed tortoise. This little being followed my son from end to end of his tank, back and forth watching where my son went and going there in earnest.
So yeah -she (that's what the woman told me) came home with us. She's extremely friendly, was very hungry, and we're completely in love with her. So now, she's in a tub until I get to the store and get her a proper enclosure.
I'm in NY, so outside isn't an option right now (I'll have a summertime pen set up for those warm summer days) so I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on a quick and easy pen idea for right now? I don't know how old she is, I'm guessing sub adult?
She ate like a champ yesterday, devouring a dish of arugula, collards, strawberries and blueberries.
She's named Kringle because it's Christmas time and my son got the finders privilege of naming her. (This is also how I have a cat named "Jefferson starship" just so you see what I'm dealing with here! [emoji23])

Congrats on your new roommate!

Eventually, you'll need a big enclosure (people here will urge 4X8), but in the short term a huge aquarium or a "holiday tree tote" from Wal-Mart or similar can house your micro-dinosaur:

There are some fantastic guides here at TFO on the keeping of redfoots abs the building of enclosures.

I'm a newbie in the tortoise world, but love living with my redfoot Darwin, and although I'm the opposite of an expert I'd be happy to help in any way that I can.

Again ... Welcome!

He or she looks like a sub adult. Let's guess she's 3 years old.
She's bumpy from being kept too dry. As in not enough humidity.
These are your parameters....What you want to achieve.
Warm not hot. A range of 80 to 88 degrees.
High humidity. As in above 75%.
UVB lighting by a florescent strip lamp. Not a coiled or compact uvb bulb.
Light without bright lights. Redfoot are not fans of constant exposure to bright lights.
And places to hide. Especially at night. Redfoot like a house to sleep in where they feel safe.
That sized tortoise would do well in an enclosure about 8 feet square.
Since I realize that most new keepers don't know this....And cant provide this...I say make the enclosure as large as you can. And make it with lid so that you can make a "closed chamber". An outdoors Summer place is a great idea, too.
For reference. A Redfoot will live between 60 and 80 years. Maybe more.

Welcome to you, your son and Kringle! She looks like she can do with some tender loving care, primarily in the form of some long, warm soaks every day. She has been kept too dry from birth. Follow the care sheets for this species as regards conditions in her enclosure and diet, and all the best with your new pet!
I am a "reptile person" too and I also keep snakes, turtles, and iguanas. For protein I sometimes offer my redfoots pinkies and they just love them. But they also get hard boiled egg crushed up with the shell, and they have their cuttlebone always available. Mango, papaya, banana, hibiscus leaves and flowers, cactus (opuntia) are some of their favourite foods.
