Shell cleaning

  • Do you use any specific solution or only water for cleaning their shells?
  • In your videos water does not seem to accumulate much on the grassy part of the ground. What kind of soil is it? Anything special used for drainage?

~ We use a solution and rinse very well with water.

Is it ok to share the contents of the solution or is it a secret? :D

Thanks. Did some research.

From wikipedia (Myakka soil):

"Soil profile
This soil typically has a very dark gray sand surface layer between 5 and 6 inches thick and a subsurface layer to about 26 inches composed of gray sand.

The subsoil to about 60 inches is sand that is stained with organic matter; black in the upper part and dark brown in the lower part.

The substratum to about 80 inches is grayish brown sand. Under natural conditions this soil has a high water table to within 10 inches of the surface for 1 to 5 months and a depth of more than 40 inches during the dry periods. Water rapidly permeates in the surface layer, subsurface layer, and substratum, then moderately in the subsoil."

Another question:
  • Is there a specific season when you don't clean their shells (for e.g. egg laying season, mating season etc)?

~ It is not a secret, however it can be extremely caustic. We are reluctant to share what the solution is because of this reason. We do share verbally, just not willing to post permanently.

~ No, we do routine and frequent health inspections. If any issues are seen, we generally treat it fast and accordingly. Much of our efforts are proactive in order to prevent any big issues. During different seasons we are more attentive to certain things to check for.
