My redfoot boy franklin is a rescue. We adopted him from Arrowhead Reptile Rescue. He was turned in to them in search of a new home. They are a wonderful group in OH. They do good work educating the community and helping reptiles in need

I didn’t purchase my Sulcata; Bull Dozer is a rescue. His human kept him in a 10 gal tank and got tired of hauling him around when she traveled. Please note: there is no such thing as a free pet. There were health issues when I got him a year ago but all have been resolved. He has his own ‘Bull Pen’ and is doing what tortoises do-eat, dig, mosey about, eat, sun, eat, poop a lot, dig some more, eat, sleep, being cute and dreaming about digging deeper. The pen is temporary. I am working on a permanent enclosure for his year round enjoyment.

I got my two RF's as hatchlings just 5 months ago from Captive Bred Specialties in Waukesha. WI. Although CBS didn't breed them, they were in excellent condition and the care information CBS gave me was spot on. Each fit comfortably in the palm of my hand when l got them. Adorable, tiny little things. Now they each fill my open hand. They are growing like weeds. And, their personaities are so adorable. They are being raised indoors. When it finally gets warm enough I'll let them graze outside on nice days (well supervised, of course). The yard has never known pesticides or fertilizers, so no worries there. I've been keeping reptiles for about 25 years now and these are my first torts. I"m so glad l got them. What sweeties!

I love telling our first tortoise story. We were in the process of adopting a daughter from China, which means we had no extra money. My girls (and me) had fallen in love with our friend’s Sulcata. I joined a yahoo group all about Sulcatas and had asked if anyone knew of any available and explained that we didn’t have the funds to buy a full grown tortoise. This was in 2009. A couple months later I got an email from Karen. She was getting older and her kids told her it was time to find homes for her tortoises. She had chosen us to be the new home for Sweetheart. In her words, “My heart will go with him.” She had gotten him as a hatchling and at the time he was five years old. He is an absolute Sweethheart too. Very friendly. We drove from Baton Rouge, LA to Savannah, GA on July 4th. Karen paid for our hotel room and told us to bring a babysitter because she was going to get us two hotel rooms far apart so my husband and I could have a weekend together. Karen was so sweet and kind. She is on my mind often. Her email address is no longer working. I want to send her an update. Sweetheart is thirteen now and still so sweet.

I found my Sulcata Tito in my mom and dad’s rose garden. Both had passed and I was renting out their home. The rose bushes were about dead and I was just ready to flood the rose bed when I found baby Tito munching on ruella. He was so tiny - as long as a toothpick. I took him to a vet and was told Tito was about 4-6 weeks old.

Oh, that is a heartbreaking story !
I just imagine how sad you must had been about the loss of your mom and dad and then found the little tortoise in their garden.
For me it is a sign of God that your parents left you a memory that will accompany you trough the rest of your life.
I think it is a great luck for you both that you found him.
Thank you for sharing your story with us.

I hope that I can find good homes for my tortoises when I am too old caring for them, but the story is so sad. I can understand very well that Karen`s heart was broken when she gave away her tortoise.

I got Gatsby from www.theturtlesource.com and I now know why he was already pyramided pretty bad when I got him. Look at their care sheet for Sulcatas especially the parts about Humidity. http://www.theturtlesource.com/caresheet.asp?id=20369&cs=Sulcatas-and-African-Spurred-Care-Sheet

I got straightened out here and he is doing exceptional.

I am getting a Sri Lankan Star this Tuesday from www.arizonatortoisecompound.com which came recommended and they also have references to this forum on their site. I see this as a very quality place since they use this forum for care.

I live in Michigan and have 15+ acres. I have a great night box and indoor play yard as well as an outdoor play yard. Gatsby is 6" and 560ish Grams. He is about a year old (but not certain).
