I've been looking to buy some weed seed. Usually the ones I find online are just small little packets. Was wondering if anybody has had any luck finding a bulk mixed packet of various outdoor weeds and if so where to get them. I have seen lots of little bags on eBay for a specific weed, but I would like to find a mixture of different ones if possible. When I Googled weed seed, the results were not your legal backyard variety.

I collect my own seeds. Is that a possibility?

My gut tells me you'd be better off growing plots of individual species, vs a weed seed mix that would have them all competing against each other in the same plot. I haven't tried what you are looking for, so I'd follow the results of your attempt with interest.

It could be a possibility I suppose. I think it's a very good idea what you're doing. I guess the main reason I was looking to buy versus gather, I am horrid at identifying weeds. The idea of just going to my own weed bed where I know everything is safe sounded oh so intriguing. What you're saying makes total sense, they probably would choke each other out. If I end up doing it, I would definitely start a new thread on it on it with plenty of pictures and the results. Thanks again for the advice.

I’m growing a bunch now from Carolina tortoise supply. It’s the broad leaf mix and 1/4 lb. They’re supposedly designed to sprout at different times and from planting last year as well I can say it was a success. I just cleared out an area planted and watered for a few weeks and the summer rains took care of the rest. Now what all sprouted don’t ask lol. Other than plantain, clover, and dandelion I couldn’t ID much but some came back in that area this year and I planted some more to fill it in. However, separate plots does allow you to know exactly what your feeding and how much. My method basically is like you pick one of these, and one of those, and oh yeah some of you over there looks good......I never know what he’s eating in the spring and summer.

I will definitely check out their website. If you ever get a chance to post some pictures of what you have grown, I would love to see them.

You may have better results by searching for the individual plants that you want to grow rather than searching for a mix.

I don’t think you find much of this in bulk; I think the bag from Tortoise Supply is just fine, even if it isn’t “weeds.”

Carolina Tortoise Supply does sell individual bags of weeds: dandelion, plantain, clover, chickweed, purslane. They sell “ornamental” mallows as well. Not huge bags but unless you are seeding a meadow this year, these packs together would be more than enough to get you started.

For “big” bags of seeds you can find common mallow on Amazon pretty easily but the ornamental versions from Tortoise Supply are just fine. You can also find pretty big bags of wild lettuce and sow thistle, crown vetch, red clover, yarrow, wild chicory, purslane, nettle (the real thing) plus other thistles, on Amazon. The total cost would be more than the one bag from Tortoise Supply, I’m sure. But they are all “real” weeds if that’s what you want.

You might also look at a bulk bag of wildflower seeds for your area. They won’t all be tortoise food but once they grow you’ll know what they are from the pictures so you only feed the best stuff.

Harvesting your own seeds is pretty easy, once things start drying out. But it’s early for anything that isn’t in the chicory family.

From an old post I made on the best companies for seed IMHO:
I will add my 2 cents:

Tortoise Supply has a great selection and fair prices http://www.tortoisesupply.com/SeedMixes
Desert Seed Store has some good mixes and hard-to-find seed species. Very cool that they hand-collect much of it. Especially great for Desert Tortoise people http://www.desertseedstore.com/shop/
I like Kitazawa for seeds of Asian greens http://www.kitazawaseed.com
Adaptive Seeds has many unusual varieties chosen for growing in cooler climates, including amaranths and quinoa https://www.adaptiveseeds.com
Territorial is similar and has a great red-stemmed dandelion http://www.territorialseed.com/category/s?keyword=dandelion
Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds has tons of varieties, including a nice upright plantain http://www.rareseeds.com/store/herbs/herbs-o-z/
And, last, and one of the best Johnny's: http://www.johnnyseeds.com/?source=...TqrsXP8dgce-IqaJ9t3GuvXrdbbyC2BsaAg9cEALw_wcB
