That is actually an interesting thread from what I just read briefly on it. I will look for the more recent one when I have time.

Don't even know who that person is, the one that shows or how creditable they are. Can you post a link to this one so we can see who all the members are saying this or contributing to the thread please. If it's not a creditable member, then it's just a member saying it and who knows where they got the info from. That really doesn't make it worthy of passing it on or true.
My comments are not pointed at you. I understand you are just reposting where you found them. My comments are in general. So someone doesn't keep passing the info on. Too many accredited long time members have said they don't know what causes them. I tend to believe them.

I don't know how to put a link. The title is "what happened to my shell" and it was in August 2013. I will keep looking for the newer one.

I did find it. Thanks. I still don't think it's a sign of being well hydrated. A wet tortoise will still show them. A tortoise being wet doesn't mean it's well hydrated.
My advice will be the same as it has been. They are normal and don't hurt anything. I won't be saying its a sign of good hydration.

Btw, if you want to copy and post a link to a thread.Go to the thread. Up in the address bar, click on it turns blue usually and a drop box or bar shows up and then click on copy. Then just go to where ever you want it link and click so the same drop box/bar shows up and click on paste.

The newest I could find was 2014 and the same thing being said that I have seen in all of them, no one knows what they are except they are normal.

I would love to see the thread. The links already posted, I don't see anything that says it's a sign of good hydration.
Don't know if I'm missing something or it you guys are reading more into what has been said.
@Yvonne G @Tom csn either one of you confirm if you have said that the squiggley lines are a sign of good hydration. When I click on the links above posted, your threads seem to be the first that pops up.

It has not been my experience that these squiggly lines are a sign of a well hydrated tortoise. Nor do I agree that exposure to the sun thickens the keratin of the carapace and makes the lines less noticeable. That was written in 2013. Don't know if the author still thinks that or not.

my Burmese mountain tortoises were raised exactly the same. I even soaked them in the same water together every night. only one of them had the squiggly lines. They're about three years old now. I don't remember when the squiggly lines went away but they haven't had exposure to direct sunlight. being Meps they didn't need sun as much as other torts. It didn't harm the tortoise that had them. However, they WERE raised in a closed chamber with high humidity...

It's all good. I just wanted to get it straight. Don't need misguided info floating around if we don't need to. You never know who might see those lines on their tort and think it's well hydrated when it really isn't.

@Fredkas hi there

Did you ever find out what these brown marks are. I do not think this is shell rot, and I don’t think it is dirt either. I have lightened photo to exaggerate a little
