So in that older thread I was the "friend" Yvonne spoke of. Richard Ogust bought the documentary about himself. That is he hired the people who made the documentary and provided a great deal of oversight on its development. At his own hand his collection crashed. I like Richard he is someone I would always seek to spend time with. He lost himself in his collection and it somehow overcame him and his sensibilities. He is a very smart person but got himself caught up beyond his ability to manage what he wanted to do. A great many of the animals had many stories associated with where they went. It really doesn't matter who, most went to as good or better circumstances.

But to be clear about the video, it is a slowly unraveling person who pushed himself to exhaustion by his own obsession. Think heroin addict. He got clean though, still has a few animals and went way underground.

Still sad that he wasn't able to create what he invisioned. Glad he's in a happier place now and hopefully the keepers who acquired his animals have done well with them.

Can't imagine anyone writing a more accurate and concise summary of this documentary than @Will has here. That was great.

This movie really touched me when I first saw it. I really felt for Richard. He is a very intelligent guy who put everything into what he was doing, and I obviously appreciate the cause. I think the lesson he teaches us is the most valuable part of this. Animal welfare come first and many of the results we want take a LONG time to reach. They are turtles, after all. Slow and steady, right?

As @CharlieM mentioned when he and I were first discussing this, it makes you anxious the entire time you watch. Can't imagine living like that. I get anxious enough having to care for my animals.

On a lighter note, I was recently filmed for two separate documentaries on turtles. I hope that we get some good new turtle documentaries to add to the library soon.
