Im moving my Russians inside so I need substrate. My local hardware store has only one type of top soil which is crap and smells bad. They have pretty fine pathway bark can I use that as my only substrate for the winter?
P.S. I dont want to use outside dirt since it will bring a lot of insects and stuff with it.

Depends what kind of bark. Have you tried coconut coir? It smells weird the first day but then it goes away. Works best for me and my Russian who both live indoors. ;)

Any soil would be O.K. as long as it is simply soil. You don't want the type that has anything added and even the organic ones might.
Read the bag and make sure it's just soil.
Also, some pine still has pine oils in it and should be avoided. It's an irritant.
I use Orchid bark or Cypress bark mulch.
