Hello Everyone!

My name is Gina and I'm new to the forum and the wonderful world of torts. My Scooter is a Sulcata hatchling and I've had him for about 5 weeks. He was given to me when he was just a few days old. I've been reading up and learning so much from you all and wanted to thank you for being so great! With all the conflicting information out there, I would truly be lost without you. I know I've got a long way to go and much to learn, but thanks to you all I've been able to start him out right. I do have him in a 20 gallon tank for now, but have plans to make him a much larger enclosure very soon. I'm using coco coir as his substrate and he eats a mixture of romaine (I'm "weeding" it out little by little) collard greens, mustard greens, Zoomed Grassland Tortoise Food, bok choy, grass and weeds from my yard and rose petals once in a while. I'll be introducing kale to him this week also. I add a little sprinkle of calcium to his food twice a week and soak him every morning before breakfast for 20 minutes or so. The ambient temperature in his tank is always in the 80's and sometimes into the 90's and the humidity fluctuates from the high 70's to 80's. It's hard to create a micro climate with a cool side and warm side in his tank which is one reason why I want to get him into a new enclosure ASAP. I use a CHE for heat at night and he has a light for basking/heat during the day. For UV I get him outside just about every afternoon for 30 minutes to an hour. He has a terra cotta water dish and a humid hide which is a plant pot tipped on it's side and buried in the substrate.

I've attached a photo of him chowing down on a rose petal. Thank you all again!

Hi and welcome. Cute, cute, cute fella! I would soak him everyday for at least 15 minutes until he's a few months old. Then, perhaps three times a week until he's a year old. Tom is a member here that has tons of years experience in raising sulcatas. Please read his care sheets on hatchlings. I would also limit the amount of kale you feed him as collards, turnips, kale, and other greens tend to cause urate (that white substance in his urine) which can case stones in the bladder -not a good thing. Otherwise, it looks like you're doing all the right things :)

Hi and welcome sounds like you have a good set up but please read the caresheet for extra information and you may find the Beginners Mistakes thread useful to learn from other people's experiences (link below) and the Enclosures thread has some great ideas. Hope to hear and see more of Scooter in the future.

Hi and welcome to you too. You may find you get more responses if you start your own introduction thread (if you haven't already done so) and more advice specifically for your species and circumstances. I have a leopard too and there is a good caresheet with lots of info about diet, temps, humidity and substrate etc and you too will find the Beginners Mistakes thread useful. I will look out for your own intro.

Okay, spinach is a no-no. It's one of the worst veggies to feed him. Rather, feed him soft cut grass, mixed with some weeds, endive, mulberry leaves, rose leaves with its petals, hibiscus flower with its leaves, spineless cactus with its fruit, etc. Some romaine is also good. I have raised my sulcatas with mazuri pellets everyday, and if I had to do it all over again, I would only had fed it to them twice a week. They grew too fast and I'm not certain that it's the best thing for them. They're healthy and at 4 years old, they weigh 100 lbs or close to that. For animals that can live to be over 100 years old, I just think they grew too fast. They're what I would call "obese" :(
