I have had a star tortoise for over 5 years. I'm not sue whether it is Indian, Burmese or Sri Lankan star tortoise. I would be grateful if anyone can give a positive id.

Welcome. It's definitely an elegans(mainland/Sri Lankan). Research is still being compiled in the field on the differences between mainland and Sri Lankan. Visually it's near impossible to tell. They still are same species just different localities with some size differences. Right now it's been noted that 3 localities of Sri Lankans are showing differences. Same with mainland. India is quite a large region that displays a magnitude of different ecosystems in which allows regionally different species of elegans to grow much larger, darker skin, more limb and facial scales etc... Versus other regions in which are much smaller much lighter skin and scale patterns. It's all in due to the different climactic ecosystems in whichever the locality is thriving and has been for many thousands of years.

Another easy differences to note between platynota(Burmese) versus elegans(Indian) is the plastron. Platynota will have 2 black chevrons on the pectoral shield of the plastron. Elegans will has the star radiating pattern as seen on your specimen. Nice animal. How do you have it set up?

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone and thanks for the identification tortadise. When I got it I compared the plastron with pics on the net and thought it was a Burmese. Over the years the plastron has changed a lot and I became confused. I keep it in a large verandah which is 10' X 4'. There are some potted plants including a huge bird nest fern providing shade. In my country the climate is similar to that of India. The temp most of the year is 80 - 90F and the humidity is 60 - 79% most of the year. Sunlight enters the verandah all year round so I don't use any special lights. In the winter when the temp falls below 75F for a couple of months I bring it in and keep it in a 4" aquarium where I can provide heat.
