From what I’ve read, millipedes seem to be a staple part of a wild hingeback tortoise’s diet. I’m considering adding them to a bioactive enclosure with my speke’s, however I’m worried about the millipedes poison. Does any one have any experience with this? I’d likely be using bumblebee or...
Hello,
I’ll be moving in a few months and will need to house my animals indoors and build new enclosures. That being said, I have a pair of box turtles and one Speke’s Hinge-back Tortoise. What is the recommended indoor enclosure size for the box turtles and the Hinge-back? (I do not plan on...
Looking at social media pages of turtle and tortoise keepers in Asia, I've noticed a lot of them use some kind of plastic matts as substrate. In addition to keeping some exceptionally rare species, the turtles I see in their photos alll have super smooth shells. I've always thought naturalistic...
I've recently become more and more interested in acquiring a pancake tortoise, however I saw not too long ago they were up listed to CITES Appendix I. Will this affect buying pancake tortoises online and shipping them across state lines? I see a lot of ads on Fauna still not mentioning needing a...
I’ve started to notice my Hinge-back Tortoise getting some white growth on the gaps between his scutes. Is this shell rot? Or are his scutes just scraped from wedging himself between rocks in his enclosure? It’s only on the carapace of of his shell and not on the plastron anywhere.
I've tried getting him to eat plant matter and even pellets for months with no success, with other box turtles I've raised they've mostly ignored veggies till they got a little older. I have all the proper care requirements in line with all sources on this forum.
Hello, I have a young (1.7 inches SCL) rescue box turtle who is growth stunted. For the past 9 months I've had him he's been eating a variety of bugs with no issues, but all the sudden he's stopped. I tried increasing the amount of hours the lights are on as well as increasing humidity. The...
Do you want just the ones kept in captivity or every single species of tortoise? There's little to no care information for some tortoises such as those in the genus psammbotes and hompus, because they do not thrive in captivity.
Today I acquired a homes hingeback tortoise from LLLreptile. After an intial check and soak I placed the tortoise in his enclosure and he walked on over and sat in the water dish, serval hours later I went to check on him and he's still in the dish. When I picked him up I noticed these worm like...
Hello, I was wondering what an appropriate diet for a homes hingeback tortoise would be? Some of what I read varies in how much protein they should be offered and what forms it should be in. Would a diet for a box turtle such as the one outlined on the 3rd page of this be sufficient...
This my box turtles new indoor enclosure, I used a book shelf as the base and lined it with plastic, then built a lid and sides around it. The lid is made of mesh-screening and window insulator sheets, making it viewable on one side so the turtles can't see out, but I can see in.
I'm not a 100%...
This is a turtle species that doesn't reach sexually maturity until at least 7 years of age, making it really hard and lengthy to get morphs of this species. Other reptiles like ball pythons where lots of morphs are present, mature much faster and can start producing offspring within a year...
