There is aluminum foil tape (made for sealing hot and cold duct work) that goes on very smoothly. I've used it on fixtures that didn't have reflectors, but only for low-wattage tube fluorescents (same app that you want to use it for). You can get it at any hardware store. Seems to work.

I live as far "down" (south) in Ontario as you can get, and this year we have a foot and a half of snow and the temp's been around 16-18F during the day. Usually, our winters aren't like this - we often go without snow for very long periods of time; this is just a really harsh winter this year.
You can easily grow your own fresh carrot tops inside, too, using the end of the carrot that you usually throw away. Stick it in water and it'll sprout shoots pretty quickly. Once some fine roots come out of the carrot part, you can pot them up.
