Gotcha thx! The top of his enclosure is half closed. I use coconut fiber substrate. I struggle most with the humidity during the winter, but its usually above 70%. I run the humidifier a couple hours a day and mist his enclosure a couple times a day so I definitely need to start using purified...
My redfoot's shell has slowly been turning white. I was pretty sure it was mineral build up from his humidifier and soaking in "hard" water. I read on another thread to put a little bit of vinegar on the affected area, but that didn't solve the problem. I rub his shell down with coconut oil and...
Really sorry about your loss. I can't imagine how that could of happened. If you ever do consider getting another tortoise, I would suggest a tropical species that doesn't hibernate so something like this won't happen again.
He was kept far too dry. He was probably under a heat light that was too hot, without any humidity. Poor guy. That's why the top of his shell looks wrinkled and his head and legs are cracked. Give him lots of soaks and make sure to keep the humidity high in his enclosure. You can also rub him...
Yeah I wish! I would love to find a tortoise in my backyard! But it is 35 degrees right now in Ohio. Its hard enough trying to keep the heat and humidity up in my indoor tortoise tank. :D
I have your same problem because I also have a open tank enclosure. There isn't many ways to boost the humidity if you have an open top tank. One thing is to have a substrate in the tank that is very absorbent, and lots of it. You could install a misting meconium, but sorta pricy and the water...
I was just looking at the last picture with your red foot in it, and it looks like one or two of his scutes on the back of his shell are cut in half. It looks like weird shell formation, but it could just be the picture. Does anyone else see it?
It's an amazing story, but I agree it sounds a little bizarre. It may be partially true that they may have lost him for a while, but nowhere near 30 years. Yeah it may have been able to eat bugs, but it would've needed water to survive. Love the story, but I think there's more there than they...
I have a red foot that was sold to me as a male. I was looked at the difference between the males and the females and a lot of people said that the males has larger tales than the females. The pictures I saw of the females looked a lot like my tortoise's. I'm lost. Is it a male or a female?
See...
Yes, pictures would help. But some tortoises are just have different personalities. Some of mine just pace the enclosure all day and others eat, sunbathe, and return to there hole they dug. Just as long as he is out and about some of the day. The most concerning part for me is that he isn't...
