SW box turtle starting to hibernate for the winter

I'm not trying to hibernate her, its something she has done on her own. She is inside where its warm. She has UVB and the proper diet. Her instincts are very strong. I'm going to get a CHE or a heat lamp and see if I can break her of this dangerous habit. Last year she slept for over 3...

SW box turtle starting to hibernate for the winter

I posted this on another turtle forum. Just looking for some multiple inputs on my little question. Earlier this year we acquired a SW box turtle from my wife's mother who was tired of watching it. Last winter this boxie hibernated in a box in the back bedroom of the mom's house. Mom had...

    new boxie ID

Thanks for the pointers! I bet she'll liven right up once we start her on a better diet and get into a better enclosure. From what I read on aboxturtle.com it seems its a girl. The tail is smaller and narrower than our male 3toe's tail. I'm still waiting for pics of underside and tail.

    new boxie ID

Well, not new new, but maybe new to us :) My gf's mom has had this boxie for quite a few years and mom is getting to the point where she doesn't want to care for it anymore. It hasn't been given the best habitat or diet (small box with wood chips and fed mostly cat food) but she did...

Can you identify this baby tortoise?

He should be in something like dirt or peat moss, not wood chips. Certain wood chips (like cedar) can even be poisonous for turtles.

    Stuborn eater

Try different greens. Kale, mustard greens or dandelions (leaf and flower). Kiwi seems to be a common fruit that a lot of boxies enjoy. Mine goes nuts for the stuff. And blueberries too. He'll smell them even when he is fully buried.

    Tank size

You shouldn't keep a box turtle in a tank. They get stressed out when they can see out but can't get out. A good start is something like my enclosure that is fairly inexpensive to assemble and will house 3 juvies for a while, but you'll need to get something bigger. This enclosure is getting...

    Eastern vs Three-Toed...?

The difference between a 5.0 and a 10.0 is how far the light will be from the turtle. If you have a deep enclosure where the light will be over 18" from the turtle you want a 10.0 and anything less a 5.0 will work. I was a total turtle noob when I got mine and this site has been by far the...

beaker finally got a beak trim

I know this post is useless without pictures but I had to post up. I've been trying to get a decent picture of his trim but he's not cooperating right now. When I do I'll post up before and after pictures. The vet clipped a little too much off one side and it bled a little, but he's all...

    Finally Fruit

    cuttlebone

Mine eats cuttlebone like its going out of style. Just leave it in there an it may get a hankerin for some cuttlebone in the future. Some days mine will eat almost an entire piece if he is given a chance, then will leave other pieces in for several days without touching it.

    Substrate

I use 100% sphagnum moss and it seems to suit my 3toe just fine. It holds moisture well but not TOO well. It is a little messy though.
