As the previous poster said, a male/female couple requires extra space and more hiding places. If you have enough room, it helps to keep a trio of 1 male and 2 females. That way, the females have his attention distributed, rather than sharply focused on one.
I just picked it up at the local pet store. It's a product made by "Jungle" called "Reptile Xtra Anti-Parasite Meal." The bottle describes it as "medicated reptile food for tortoises and lizards." It is a green powder that is sprinkled over their food every so often.
Just a little while ago, my Russian tortoise couple arrived via FedEx. When I removed them from the box, they were both energetic and active. I took them inside, placed them in a tub, and offered them veggies sprinkled with anti-parasite meal. They both ate, which is definately a good sign. They...
For the last few days, the temp in my area has been over 100 degrees. My Russian tortoise burrowed into the dirt and went into estavation. I got her out of the ground and now she's in a 50-gallon tub and enjoying the air conditioning with me; I'll keep her inside until this heatwave passes...
Since lllreptile has more positive reviews than negative ones, I gave them a shot and ordered a pair of Russians. I'll be posting how my business with them goes.
Wouldn't buy from turtle sale in a million years; they're the worst. Intentionally breeding blind animals is enough for me to avoid them in and of itself.
I want to buy a male (or a male/female couple) to go with the female that I current have. I prefer a site that accepts paypal, so where would be a good place to look? I've heard bad things about lllreptile's livestock and I'm getting no replies from premiumtortoises.com.
That's a beautiful female Eastern box turtle you've got! By the way, you can tell its female because the platron (bottom of its shell) is flat; males have a very visible dent on the plastron that helps them with mating. The neighbors were crazy to dump such a gorgeous creature, but their loss is...
I happened to walk up on this scene while visiting the zoo last year. The lady beside me told her kid that the tortoises were "posing for the camera." I figured you'd get a kick out of this:
Ah, I see. Thank you for the information. Now that I know Myrtle is a truly a lil' lady, it is time to find her a boyfriend. I shall name him Marty. :P
I've heard that females have short tails and males have long tails. What made me unsure is that I've read males can still have small tails when they're just 4 inches and will develop longer ones at 5 or 6 inches. Of course, that's just something I read. How old/long is the one in the picture?
