I have a red footed tortoise her name is Sally and she is very healthy she is about six years old human years I think???!!she is about six years old I keep her in a well ventilated and a well heat lamp light above it for her, that stays on between 10 and 12 hours a day in the summer time I'd let her roam the backyard as much as possible as long as it's 65° or warmer in the winter time she stays in her cage where she has a sleeping section and a constant source of water I feed her every other day in the winter to her because she only goes in to partial hibernation. Unlike summertime where I feed her every day and put her in the tub if I do not put her in the tub and run hot water and let her sit in it she will not P or poop. The only way she will P or poop is if I put her in the hot tub which I do every day we have it down to a science she can be moody some days but other than that she is great she loves strawberries and she loves grass, during the summer she has plenty of roaming room and plenty of grass to eat outback in my yard which is turtle proof which means she cannot escape I have a means for water the whole time she's out there and I also have an enclosure for her that she goes under for a rest, she loves strawberries so she mainly eat a mix of strawberries and turtle pallets that melt when they hit the water and I tried to give her a ground meet at least twice a week since I've owned her for a year and a half she has grown tremendously, now that it's summer time she is a lot more active and loves going outside in the backyard which I make sure there is nothing bad in the yard she can eat other than grass and has gotten a lot more active I am a huge turtle lover always have been always will, any feedback or tips would be wonderful I've been trying to find a site like this for a while now so please don't hesitate, I have some questions like I know she is a cold blooded tortoise and I find it odd that she will only P and poop when the water is at least 70° hot what's up with that ?? Hello everyone my name is Rob. I have a red footed female tortoise, she is from the Galapagos islands and west Africa. I would love to see or find out how old she is? I’ve had her ever since April 2015. The old owner was not taking care of it properly and had a brother and it died . So at that point I took Sallyann off of her hands. Now I have some questions how can I find out how old she is? Or their secret remedies I keep her in a pretty big cage she even has her own cubbyhole she can go until which is where she sleeps now that it’s winter time I have her UVB lamp off because I was told she cannot be put out side in the winter that it has to be 60 degrees or above now I try and keep her warm I have a electronic heat sensor and I have a battery-operated wine. Now with that being said I always and this is what I was told keep the temperature between 70 and 80° is that OK? I’m new to this website and I’m not too sure how it works so any feedback would be great thank you all and God bless I’m going to try and post some pictures???!!
