    Naive breeding question

That makes a lot of sense. The incubators I've seen are fairly small. Do most of the several hundred hatchlings each season end up with consumer hobbyists? Or is it more with zoos/rehab and release type programs?

    Naive breeding question

I would think a standard thermometer feedback loop on a decently insulated incubator could keep ±1 °C

    Naive breeding question

Thanks guys! That was fascinating. I've only dealt in lab grade temperature control equipment for the last decade or so (work not hobby) so it didn't occur to me that you couldn't target the temperatures exactly. I'm surprised that the bound between failure and 100% population is so slim. I'd...

    Naive breeding question

I'm not breeding any turtles or tortoises at the moment, but I had a thought that a quick internet search didn't turn up an answer to. If we incubate our eggs in a constant temperature and humidity environment, and reptile sex is dependent upon incubation temperature, how do breeders not turn...

Newbie turtle tank DIY lid advice...

I see. As @gtruck777 said, it will depend on whether you want the basking area (and thus lights) to be above the top of the tank or flush with the top of the tank. Since you're getting a common musk turtle, and @Moozillion, correct me if I'm wrong, you generally want relatively low water levels...

Building Our Turtle and Tortoise Resort

Every so often I'll check back up on this to see if the last step is there for water proofing and such. Its a beautiful setup and I'd love to see the finale.

    Accidental biting during feeding

Thanks for the info. It made me think of that .gif that has floated around the internet forever of the alligators that are feeding and one accidentally grabs the others hand, rips it off, and eats it. The now 1 armed gator just looks at the guy that just ate his hand like "seriously man. I'm so...

    Accidental biting during feeding

Good morning! This morning when feeding the 4 maps in the living room aquarium one of them (A) clamped down on the front hand of another (B). It seemed accidental since they were both going for the same food pellet, but A refused to let go. I picked them both up out of the water being careful...

    My Spotted Turtle

Thats super cool. Hows the filtration? Do you have to change a prefilter pretty often? It seems like you've got a great naturalistic environment there.

    "Pond" algae and update

Well I ended up having to go nuclear on it. I swapped out the little canister filter for a 100 gallon plastic stock tank. The stock tank is gravity fed by two 1.5" feed lines (one in each tank) towards the bottom of each tank. You can see the pipes in the pictures below. The return pump is...

    Map turtles in Northern California

I'm in the east Bay Area so we don't ever get what would traditionally be called "cold." That doesn't stop people from walking around in their North Face puffer jackets rated for 0 °F as soon as it hits 60 °F around here, but I can't imagine the turtles notice that. I would have gladly...

    New Maps!

Good morning! On further investigation 3 are very similar and the grayer skinned hatchling is the odd man out. Pictures below from feeding this morning. Its difficult to tell the skin tone, but I think the shell coloration and density of pattern is pretty apparently different for two of them.

    New Maps!

Thanks Jeff! These guys are absolutely beautiful and move around quite a lot.

    New Maps!

Ya I didn't think to take pictures before I put them in. I'll get some during feeding tomorrow. I think until they get used to pellets I'll probably have to catch them to move into a separate area for eating so that find food. I'll get some tomorrow. Looking at more pictures of the Ouachita they...
