I read the article again. It states, "The effect of overlapping beams is additive, so zoos have been able to create enormous UVB zones for giant reptiles by using multiple T5-HO lamps in horticultural reflector fixtures, hung high above the animals (Figure 7)." Figure 7 is the Galapagos...
Boy, I typed up the post, previewed it and somehow deleted it. Here is goes again. LOL
I am making a large indoor enclosure for 2 leopard tortoises. It is 13' X 9'.
I am using Arcadia T5 HO 46" 12% bulbs, plus a large basking area. I am ordering a solarmeter today.
Originally, I was going to...
I need to upgrade my tortoise enclosure. I have 2 leopards just over a couple years. They are roughly 2.75 and 3 lbs. When can I stop using a closed system? I also need ideas on building materials that they won't destroy as they get older. Is there a nice care sheet for leopards, other than the...
Have you been able to get it to urinate and poop yet? If not, try rubbing the warm, wet q-tip quickly (but not too hard). I volunteered at a wildlife center years ago and had to potty baby squirrels and raccoons. You can probably find a YouTube video of you aren't already rubbing like that.
He is likely soaking himself because you are using a screen top that doesn't keep humidity in. Read through the care guide. I'd post the link if I knew how. LOL He needs 80% humidity.
Are those all galaps? The large one on the right has the really high shell near the neck to reach branches. He looks like Lonesome George! Is he a different locale than the others, or does this happen with maturity?
Okay, I feel pretty stupid right now. I had no idea we even had a tortoise in the SE! I only knew about the desert tortoise in the SW. First thing I've learned in the new year. Thanks for posting!
Sorry! I see people use these greenhouse covers: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J04EXWI/?tag=exoticpetnetw-20
I'm in the US though. I didn't use a cover for my Hermann's. His cage was homemade and had a lid that kept humidity in. Do you have a pic of what he's in? I can try to help with...
Looking at his shell and that he drinks a lot, it looks like you could raise the humidity in his enclosure. He should be 70%. I raised mine like this, and his shell is super smooth! I would attach the care sheet, but I don't know how...maybe someone else will.
Looks too young still. My Hermann's looked just like this, with a longish tail. Then almost overnight the tail grew HUGE!! I was able to sex him at around 15 months, but he was a really fast grower.
Sorry for the double post. My phone is being a pain.
The cypress could be irritating her eyes. Don't thunk trust would explain lethargy and decreased appetite. The top soil doesn't dry out.
Thanks! Symptoms before meds were also lethargy and not eating, losing weight too. It's possible the temp got a degree or two cooler before I noticed, but it couldn't have gotten more than that. Thermometer is digital. I don't think it's vitamin A deficiency as the eyes aren't puffy, plus I'm...
