Question about outside habitat for 10 month old Sulcata

Thanks for all the info! I am stuck on what to do about UV. If the enclosure is 2 1/2 to 3 feet tall, that would reduce significantly any UV from bulbs attached to the top of the enclosure. Any ideas how to workaround this?

    Spica hits 2 pounds!

Spica the Sassy Sulcata has hit 2 pounds! (again)... :) I was so very excited to record her monumentous achievement, when she hit 904 grams. But I think she must have been insecure about me being very excited about her weight gain, so she peed 63 grams of pee all over my floor :) So we had to...

Question about outside habitat for 10 month old Sulcata

Thanks so much @Tom ! I have cleaned out the room I plan to use for the enclosure. I have 10x10ft space but that is taking up the Entire floor. So basically I want to build something that I can place Spica in over winter and inclement weather for the next year or two. Obviously I don't want to...

Question about outside habitat for 10 month old Sulcata

Sorry to not respond sooner. I was busy finishing up classes and wanted to wait until I was planning out the structure I am wanting to build for Spica. My plan is to build an indoor habitat for her to use this winter. It will be in a room dedicated to this purpose and be anywhere from 6X8 t0...

Question about outside habitat for 10 month old Sulcata

I haven't posted in awhile, but my Sulcata (Spica) is now 10 months old and doing well. She has long outgrown her indoor enclosure (she only goes in there to sleep), I have been taking her outside to her outdoor enclosure every morning as soon as it is warm enough and bringing her back in when...

Preparing next year's outdoor enclosure for baby Sulcata in colder clim

I am inspired that you live in Ohio! : ) I am going to keep you in mind with climate questions! If you don't mind : ) I am slightly overwhelmed but up for the challenge to keep up with the speed of this tortoise. I have the yard for an enclosure, I just want to be on top of providing a good and...

Balancing Temperature, Humidity and UV Light for Baby Sulcata

I have been considering adding more Coco Coir to both get Spica closer to the UV light (when I get it set up) and also to allow her a bit more burrowing and micro climates. I was thinking 4 inches? Is that a good amount? More/less? I am working on brainstorming blueprints for a larger indoor...

Preparing next year's outdoor enclosure for baby Sulcata in colder clim

Today I have been preparing my garden beds for winter. I have a large yard, which was originally set up as a permaculture garden. One third of the yard is fruit trees and ground cover beneath them, fruit bushes and annual veggies (for example, asparagus). Another third is garden beds..which are...

Balancing Temperature, Humidity and UV Light for Baby Sulcata

Thanks. I will get everything set up and will add more questions later if I get stuck. :) Oh, one last question...should the CHE be placed on the warm side near the basking light? Could it be placed on the cool side or in the middle?

Balancing Temperature, Humidity and UV Light for Baby Sulcata

Good point about the micro climates! I wasn't referencing a coil or compact fluorescent...more something like this... Is this a good choice?

Balancing Temperature, Humidity and UV Light for Baby Sulcata

Thanks for your feedback! I am going to purchase the fluorescent bulb and use that along with the 45 watt. My partner found a brand “Zilla” is that any better/worse than “ReptiSun”? Now I am thinking about building a bigger enclosure. How can you tell when an enclosure is too small? The store...

Balancing Temperature, Humidity and UV Light for Baby Sulcata

I recently acquired a hatchling Sulcata, Spica. The store told me many things that I am afraid were misleading. I have been doing my research, and have some other equipment coming in the mail in hopes that I can better give this little one what she needs. I have a 30 gallon aquarium (36 long...

The youngster finally has a name! She (or he) is named Spica after the brightest star in Virgo.

Thanks for the information! I have read the stickies on the Sulcata section, but have not seen the ones in the General Tortoise section. I will check them out. This forum has been so helpful.
