Which zoomed bulb for Burmese Browns? Help me choose

Yeah, I know they prefer heavily shaded areas so that's why I'm conflicted on light source. I will be able to get them outside dependably from about April through October. I'm in Colorado, so we even have nice days during the winter where the sun is shining and it's 60 degrees. I'm also...

Which zoomed bulb for Burmese Browns? Help me choose

I know I have posted previusly about this, but I'm still not sure which bulb to get for my new Burmese brown. Here are the candidates: 1. Zoomed t5 HO 5.0 strip bulb about 14-15 inches away from tortoise. Will be diluted through a metal screen, and heavy plant cover in the enclosure. 2. Zoomed...

    Burmese Brown Tortoise and UVB

Ok. Now I'm thinking of a t5 5.0 UVB bulb about 14 inches above the tortoise, with a ton of plants for shade. Thinking of constructing a pvc cube and draping plants over it to simulate a shaded rainforest with some sun coming through. What do you think?

Zoomed T5 5.0 good choice for Burmese Brown

Well it would actually be easier to put the bulb up higher around 14 inches away from the animal, so that's not a problem at all. Part of me just wants to forego a full time UVB bulb in the enclosure, and just get the burm outside when it's warm. I was thinking during winter that I could have a...

    Burmese Brown Tortoise and UVB

Yvonne, what kind of UVB bulb do you use? 10.0 or 5.0? I guess I'm confused because I see multiple posts of yours where you say that you don't use a UVB bulb with Burmese browns.

Zoomed T5 5.0 good choice for Burmese Brown

Ok, I wish I could afford a solar meter at this time. The reason I'm going with the weaker 5.0 bulb instead of the 10.0 is that I don't want to overwhelm the tortoises with UVB, as they only receive small amounts of light naturally under a rainforest canopy. I keep hearing that the Burmese...

Zoomed T5 5.0 good choice for Burmese Brown

Hey everyone, I'm trying to put together the correct lighting for a hatchling Burmese brown arriving next week hopefully. As of now I am thinking of going with a zoomed t5 5.0 bulb that is about 10 inches from the tortoises shell. I know these guys are forest species and dont love intense...

    Burmese Brown Tortoise and UVB

Ah, I see. So maybe a 5.0 UVB strip bulb, and 60W CHE to bring one side to 85 ish?

    Burmese Brown Tortoise and UVB

Ok. What kind of uvb and heat source did you use for hatchlings? Would you mind describing your setup? My area is extremely dry, so I am not able to use typical tortoise table setups to maintain high humidity. For my sulcata I have a closed chamber design.

    Burmese Brown Tortoise and UVB

Hey All- I will be ordering a Burmese Brown Mountain Tortoise here in the next few weeks and wanted to get some husbandry issues settled. I recently read Yvonne's post that Burmese Brown's as a forest species do not require a full time UVB bulb, and that she noticed that when she did add a UVB...

    Interacting with young sulcata

Hi Everyone, I'm sure this topic has been discussed a lot, but I still wanted to ask the experts. I've had my hatchling sulcata for about 7 months now. He seems to be very healthy, has a voracious appetite and enjoys his soaks. I've noticed that since I brought him home, that he seems pretty...

    Tiny fleas in sulcata enclosure

Hey All, So I have noticed that I have a few small winged flea-like bugs in my sulcata enclosure. These are definitely NOT mites. I have waged war on reptile mites in years past with my snakes, and these are not the same. They buzz around the enclosure, and I see some dead on the CHE. They...

Any risk after dropping my MVB?

Finally a chance to talk toxicology! I would need to do some more research into how much mercury is actually in a MVB. I know that for a standard CFL light, there is only about .04-.7 mg of mercury released when the bulb breaks. As long as you didn't huff the fumes you will be fine. Just make...

    Tortoise Enclosure

By closed chamber, we basically mean anything that prevents the loss of moisture and can keep humidity up near 80%. Really anyway that you can make this happen works. I built my enclosure out of plywood, but many people seal the tops of tortoise tables with plastic sheeting etc. Limiting...
