This year is my first year brumating one of my Western Hermann’s tortoises. He’s being brumated indoors in a temp monitored mini fridge in a bin of substrate topped with leaves.
I did a check on him yesterday and he’s looking great! In the last month he’s only lost maybe a gram in weight, but...
Thanks Tom I will check this out! I had wanted to make it as naturalistic as possible which is why I followed his guide along with this forum. We’ve been in a holding pattern for years and I hopped back on because I’m brumating one of them for the first time, and planning an outdoor enclosure...
🤣 that’s so funny I totally forgot I used that stuff! This is an old picture of when she was a baby as a humid hide. They never used it anyway so I didn’t use it for long
I've had my two Hermann's for 3 years now and it seems the recommendations have changed for enclosure substrate since I last did research. I initially set their tables up according to the Hermanni Haven topsoil + sand + coco coir or whatever mixture but it looks like topsoil is no longer...
Mine were making a noise at one point and it ended up being the sound of their little beaks grinding. If the clicking is while inhaling or exhaling I would be worried about about lung sounds but they do make some noise with their beak in normal activity especially if the room is already quiet...
She ended up rehoming her unfortunately, she did grow again and got much bigger but they added a dog that ended up having a ton of health issues. They found her a home with another Leopard tort owner that lets them roam the house. I think it was for the best but figured in case it helps anyone...
Haha thanks Tom! I will take a look at this and start working on some plans. I've also considered a greenhouse since that may look less "ugly" than a wooden box stuck in the yard...I'll have to figure out a compromise!
I should follow up with this, she ended up having the enclosure and ambient room temp much too cool. Once she covered the enclosure with a mini greenhouse she started eating more and was much more active!
Hello All,
I am hoping to build a secure and appropriate full-time outdoor enclosure for my Hermann's tortoises that they can live in from March til October. Anyone in a cooler/wetter climate successfully keep them outdoors full time? I'm hoping to make something insulated with adequate...
My Sardinian Western hatchling arrived from Chris almost a week ago, and I am kicking myself for not going for it and getting multiple! The experience was awesome and he was great to work with. I love how he raises his babies and Thistle arrived and has been burrowing, eating, and doing...
