Long time turtle lover (since the 1990 Saturday morning TMNT cartoon), but I haven't been be established enough to have my own pet turtle until purchasing a pair of Russian tortoises in June 2016. I did help a kid SIL setup a habitat for a baby RES that she bought on a whim at a flea market a decade ago. I tried to teach her how to care for the turtle properly but it eventually died because of general inattention.
Long term I'd like to breed russian tortoises, but I'm just starting slow and making sure I can provide a good existence before I get too focused on breeding. So for now we enjoy the tortoises as a family pet which has been great to teach the kids some responsibility (even though I spend a lot of time reminding them make sure the torts are fed, watered, and cleaned).
I currently have Fancy Goldfish and Guppies as pets in a 55 gallon tank. (I always have guppy fry available to a good home).
