Hello!
I’ve had my Russian for about 3 years now. I haven’t trimmed his beak since, but lately I’ve seen his beak is a bit overgrown. Do I need to take him to a vet for a trim, or will I be able to do it at home by giving him whole leafs?
He’s already fed on an unglazed terra cotta plant...
I’ve had my Russian for about 3 years now. We started him off in coco coir, which he seemed to enjoy. He loved digging in it, but it was too messy and got into his food/water bowls constantly.
We ended up switching it out for orchid bark. it’s been much better, cleaner, and looks a lot nicer...
Looks like their profile pic is a photo of their enclosure.
OP, please read those care sheets! Seems like you could change quite a lot judging by your profile pic.
If they've bullied each other before, wouldn't it be best to keep them separated no matter what? I know I've seen pictures of baby sulcatas with missing eyes/scales due to small fights with other torts.
Seems like you got almost all wrong information for your Russian. Please go to our Russian section and look at the care sheet posted at the top.
You will need a much, much larger enclosure. Minimum 8x4 feet, but the larger the better.
Is the UVB light a coiled/twisty lamp? If so, please return...
How cold does it get in your house at night? Russians generally don't need any night heat unless it gets under 60 degrees. They even might benefit more from lower night temps.
He's still new, he might still be getting used to his new home. they are very active the first couple of days because...
Of course the pet store would sell you those items, they only care about making money and not the wellbeing of your tortoise. Please listen to everyone else in this thread. We aren't trying to sell you things, or even make money off of this. We just want your tort to be healthy and thrive.
Where did you read that? Russians are grazers, they need to have a pretty constant amount of food. As long as their enclosure is big enough, they won't get obese or gain too much weight. Just put down a good amount of food in the morning. If you see he ate it all by the afternoon, put an even...
Congrats on your new tort!
How big is his total enclosure? For Russians, even though they are very small they still require a larger enclosure. I like at least 8x4 feet, but if you can go bigger even better!
You may want to check out our care sheet in the Russian section if you haven't...
Most likely due to a small enclosure. When its not big enough, there's not much reason for them to walk around and explore so they just sleep and burrow. I'd recommend at least 8x4 feet for a Russian, since yours is most likely already full grown.
