These photos were taken several weeks apart. Maybe I'm not very observant, but I've never noticed this on my tort before in years.
One was on his leg among his scales. I thought maybe a scale came loose when he was climbing on rocks outside, but I snapped a pic just in case. Well, today I...
He's finally eating again, but not as much as he used to. I think what turned the tide was my wife letting him roam around the floor. He wouldn't eat out of his bowl in the cage but he'd eat lettuce off the floor. He must want to forage.
Pic of the cage here. https://www.tortoiseforum.org/threads/need-help-vitamin-a-options-for-russian-tortoise.190067/post-1923575
I added the CHE next to the sun lamp.
The top of my cage is open because i read long ago it was good to have circulation. Maybe I could cover it with tin foil for...
So right now I have the 60w in a dome. It can barely keep up but when I checked this early this morning it was 70F in the cage. The bulb itself got up to 500 some degrees, but the socket was still cool enough to touch.
The 100w simply does not work in any configuration.
My guy still isn't...
I'm not touching the bulb, I'm touching the ceramic light fixture it is in. I think this bulb may be defective. I went and bought a 100w today and I'll test tonight.
Yes, it is on a thermostat.
Today my wife placed lettuce on a tupperware lid and he ate off it. (but not a lot).
Could he simply not like his normal food dish anymore? For years I've used glazed ceramic dishes that are about 8" diameter with a half inch lip around the edge.
I got a 60w CHE but it doesn't seem to get very hot at all. I can touch the fixture with my fingers. (no way I could do that with my Power Sun) Is this normal, and how close do you get it to the bedding of your enclosure?
Also, the CHE said not to use it with a dome because it would overheat...
I noticed he wasn't really eating as much about 2 or 3 weeks ago. First I thought maybe the UV part of his Power Sun bulb had gone bad so I replaced it. Then I noticed when he did eat he had trouble getting stuff in his mouth because of the long beak. (That's what got me on the vitamin A thing...
The vet (a different one from last time) looked him over and said his eyes appear normal. She said that he needs more exercise and told me it was OK to take him outside as long as it was at least 45 degrees (F) outside. That's the first time I've ever heard of taking him out when its that cold...
he doesn't get straw berries normally. I'm trying to encourage him to eat. He usually eats the diet I posted above every day but he hasn't been lately.
I can change some of the things in his environment but I can't get him outside much in Wisconsin.
I used to have soil in his box but it always...
