Pyramiding: At what age can we let RF tortoises live outdoors "full time".

When you say decent size, do you mean 4-5 inches? How long would the transitional period be? 1-2 years?

Pyramiding: At what age can we let RF tortoises live outdoors "full time".

I do have a large enclosure at the office. I haven’t seen birds go into the enclosure, but I did see a cat get inside a couple of years ago. After that, I placed a plastic chicken “wire” to keep the cat out. It’s working thus far.

Pyramiding: At what age can we let RF tortoises live outdoors "full time".

Hello, I live in Florida and most of the time the humidity is high. At what age will baby RFs stop pyramiding so that they can be placed outside to live(as opposed to being in a closed chamber for life). Is there research that someone can point to? Thanks! Gerald

What A Tortoise's Stone Looks Like

Did you have Bob when he was a baby? Sorry for your loss. Seventeen years......I can't imagine.

Humidity: Closed chamber versus Ventilated chamber.

Thanks! I guess I am just an oddball thinking outside the box. I removed the plastic ramped water feeder and replaced it with a feeder that is the same height and volume as a medium sized terra cotta saucer, but made with heavy plastic.

Humidity: Closed chamber versus Ventilated chamber.

Thanks! That's awesome that you are able to take Stella to school!

Humidity: Closed chamber versus Ventilated chamber.

I agree! Low maintenance these RF tortoises, especially living in Florida where the humidity and temperature are closer to their natural habitat.

Wow! What a set-up. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! It is just something to share with the public at my office.

Humidity: Closed chamber versus Ventilated chamber.

Thanks Yvonne. The two little ones use the 1 Liter water feeder and they are able to submerge their entire head except the very top surface of their heads. I just added the ramped water bowl in the temporary enclosure. Per Tom's suggestions, I will get a terra cotta plant saucer. In the...

Humidity: Closed chamber versus Ventilated chamber.

Hey Tom, This enclosure is temporary and these two have lived in my outdoor enclosure(Tortoise Sanctuary) at my office for almost 3 years now. They have lived with three larger ones that are living in there currently. Due to the COVID-19 mandate closure to my office, I have decided to keep...

Humidity: Closed chamber versus Ventilated chamber.

I have no issues with people having more experience than me giving me advice. I just don’t like someone telling me: “You need to get rid of that water bottle. Your tort cannot drink from it.” These are the exact words! When in fact, my tortoises have been “trained” to drink using the water...

Humidity: Closed chamber versus Ventilated chamber.

That looks great! My set up could look like that with substrate and plants. Thanks!

Humidity: Closed chamber versus Ventilated chamber.

Sounds good, but how do you know my tortoises “cannot” drink from the water feeder? Are you assuming or know this to be a fact?

Humidity: Closed chamber versus Ventilated chamber.

When I posted on FB my current enclosure, I was told to have vents in it to let fresh air in and stale air out. Before I added the ventilating fans, the enclosure was a closed chamber, and was able to get 80-90% humidity. After adding the ventilating fans(even set at lowest), I can only get avg...
