Timmy at the veterinarian
  • Wow
Reactions: Jan A
He had diarrhea for two weeks, started to be aggressive by ramming objects and trying to climb out of his enclosure. I place a small hand towel on the living room floor as his diaper, Timmy would only sleep on top of his towel near me under my desk for hours. He ate less and this was an obvious sign of concern/discomfort. We found a reptile/tortoise Veterinary (Radnor Veterinary Animal Hospital) in Pennsylvania and responded to them with stool samples. Upon microscopic examination and tests, no parasites or worms were found. The Veterinary stated it may just be an intestinal infection and prescribed antibiotics by mouth, (medicine administered orally by syringe every other day for four days). At home he started to be calm again. Total Veterinary costs: $135.20

You have some of the WEIRDEST husbandry and care I have seen. Tortoise don’t get sick for no reason, it’s something your doing. Nothing found in the stool but the vet still prescribed something? So they guessed? Your tort is probably stressed from the weird stuff you do to it. Like not letting it poop on its own... like giving it a towel under a desk.... enclosure 4 times too small...... keep interacting it with your other timmy. Ramming is not a sign of intestinal infection. Scratching at the walls is not symptom of infection.

Yes, it could be stress from the cold weather

Yeah and you let them roam the floors which is probably 5 to 8 degrees cooler than what you feel as a human not on the floor. How warm do you keep your house? Think about that. Also you know that you provide heat for the tortoise in its enclosure, the tortoise does not create its own heat, so therefore that towel you give it to keep “warm” does nothing on your floor. House roaming and then put back in its small cage, Its confused and trying to find a comfortable spot. AND now its on antibiotics for no reason.

The Vet said to do so, better safe than sorry.

For everyone's information, tortoises:

I raise several different tortoise species and I deworm the tortoises and treat the tortoises with Flagyl routinely. Are there any medications other than metronidazole that will work to treat flagellates for routine use in tortoises? Even the “tasteless” or flavored metro is detected by some of my tortoises.

A. Metronidazole, trade name Flagyl, is quite nasty tasting, unless you have access to the Mexican oral suspension, which is citrus flavored and the most palatable form available (unless your vet works with a compounding pharmacist to make an oral suspension in flavors to mask the bitter taste).

From pcrealty: Tortoise's always have some protozoans by nature, it must be regulated with Metronidazole liquid, .19 ML by mouth for 4 days, every 48 hours when out of control. The Veterinarian stated there are not too many tests available for loose bowel movements.
