Hi all,
New tort owner here.
I'm sorry if this question has been asked hundreds of times, however I could not find any suitable info via the search function in the forum or googling.

Background Info:
Introducing Tortilla.
I found this little Hermann at a local tortoise specialty shop here in Taiwan about 2 months ago. Overall he has a very healthy appetite, his eyes and nose are clear and he is very social and loves to be hand fed.

I have had him in an enclosure inside (as it has been very rainy for the past couple months) with a UV bulb and 10-15 minute daily baths. His diet is primarily clover, dandelion, weeds and grasses and a few other indigenous plants that were suggested along with a tortoise supplement. I take him out to graze for about an hour every other day and the rest of the time he eats food that has been hand picked (by me) while he is out pigging out.
I have recently moved him outside as its a bit sunnier.

Here's the question:
I have recently noticed a bit of growth, starting with the belly between scutes. Shortly after, maybe a couple weeks or the growth is now more apparent on the upper carapace between the plates. This growth appears to be healthy and doesn't appear to be too fast. The issue is at the same time I noticed the carapace growth, I also noticed the the small whitish circles all over his shell which looks like some kind of delimitation or peeling between the layers of the shell itself. This was not visible prior to the change in growth.
Is this normal shell growth or is this a symptom of dry shell rot? Or something else entirely? I have not been able to find a very clear explanation of shell growth or symptoms of shell rot which match what I'm seeing.
Thanks,
dj

你好!欢迎也是从台湾来的龟友!对不起,我只有谷歌简体中文版!

I really cannot tell any visible issue from those pics you supplied. I cannot tell any whitish circles you mentioned. I have 1.2 full grow Hermanni too, but they stay outdoor year round till the hibernation. Can you supply some close-up photos for the concern of yours?

Hi,
Thanks! Its ok my Chinese is terrible..

I've tried to enlarge the marks I'm referring to. These small areas are completely covering the shell at this point. It really doesn't look like the shell is peeling since most of these areas are under the surface of the shell.
When the shell grows, does it only grow from the outside most part of the plate or is the growth the entire bottom layer of the scute adding a new layer underneath?

Yep!!

Now I can tell what you talking about but I have no idea what caused. Some sort of vitamin deficiency? I know someone will identify it soon here.

Those circles are normal, but I don't believe we have ever figured out exactly what they are. They could be something to do with growth or hydration, but at this point those are more guesses then anything.

Those are the horrible, horrible white squiggly line and circles! How could you let them get so bad?!?!?!

JUST KIDDING. ;) Those are very normal. Quite a percentage of growing tortoises get these. They will go away with time. My little sulcatas have them, and they starting to fade after 5 monthes.

Hi DJ, and welcome to the Forum!!

If you do a search for "white squiggly lines" you'll see we've talked about this quite a bit on the Forum. No one knows why or what they are, but it is quite normal. Personally, I think it has to do with a growing, healthy animal. I think it is a sign that the tortoise is healthy.

I love the first picture. That's a beautiful face!

(And smarty pants Bouaboua was saying, "Hello! Welcome also from Taiwan Gui! I'm sorry, I only have Google Simplified Chinese version!"

My little Hermann's tortoise has those marks on his plastron too. As far as I can tell, and going along with other forum members have told me, they're perfectly natural
