On May 20, 2012, Tom and I met with bfmorris and acquired 20 sulcata hatchlings of Sudanese origin. We figured them to be about a week old at the time. We've had our problems...but what we've wound up with has us happy...for the moist part. I'm not going to go into particulars here...because I know Tom is going to elaborate on the pros and cons of our transaction... and their upbringing! I'm merely going to show you what I've got NOW...My top three have thrived for the most part...the other three have had their setbacks here and there...but over the past three months, they've started to kick it into second gear! All are smooth to very slightly lumpy...but I'll work to perfect them over the next year or two! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the DIRTY (half) DOZEN!

There is a method to the madness...but as I will probably release a book or dvd-rom of tortoise yawns...can't divulge...yet!

The only features that differentiate them from other sulcata loclaes is that they are high-domed, significantly larger (exceeding 250 lbs) and a little more prehistoric in appearance.

Are they all the same age?
Yes...Tom and I got 20 of them initially. We lost a couple to whatever cause(s)...Tom parted with a few, but we still have 11 between us...but...having decided to take on the ivories for the long haul...I may let mine go. I plan to keep Monstro...and am planning to acquire one of Andy's monsters.

DeanS,
You say 3 of them have slightly lumpy carapaces and in the next 1 or 2 years they will have smooth shells.
What are you going to do to get them to have a smooth carapace?

Very nice Dean. Great looking torts, Marv looks like he will re-write the book on big sulcatas.

Yeah...but, as a whole, Tom's are bigger (as a herd). Marv might stand out individually...but the others are lagging, even though the next two largest are catching up! We'll see!
