Hello I’m Alexandra I have 4 tortoises all living separately 2 horsefields a Herman & a spur thigh we live in the New Forest UK . I’ve been growing a lot of weeds buying the seeds from a reptile online store & to my horror one of my trays has sprouted solarum Nigrum the deadly nightshade family , the tray is full of only them so I’m sure they came from the seeds I bought . I’m getting quite confused after having them identified some people have told me they’re not poisonous. I’m assuming they are poisonous but before I dispose of them I thought I’d ask you experts your opinion. ( I think they should of been dandelions as the dandelions haven’t grown unfortunately my label blew away ? ) thanks in advance for any info ☺️

Hi, and welcome!

Sorry, I don't know anything about this plant. When I asked my friend, Google, about it I got two different answers, yes it's edible, and no it's toxic.

This says the berries are the toxic part of the plant...I have deadly nightshade in one of my tortoise enclosures, I have lived here for 15 years and had that plant in my Sulcata pen. It's always been just one vine and I pull it out root and all, but it grows back every year. The berries of mine are red and toxic

Interesting article. This thread reminds me of pokeweed (which I just learned is ALSO called American nightshade). Some wild birds and reptiles eat it; it's dangerous to mammals. But I grew up never knowing it was a "bad" plant, my grandma taught me about the tradition of boiling up the leaves and it was tasty!

A big welcome to you and your tortoise family!
