I've put together my pancake group! Most of these beauties are from Dave Mifsud. Two I got from Randy at Tortstork. I'll raise these and breed them to help conserve their critically endangered species.

So now my breeding program will cover the Testudo graeca and the Pancakes.

And since Swahili is the native language in Tanzania and Kenya where the Pancakes live in the wild, I've given all of mine names in Swahili.

Here are: Kesho, Asali, Paka, Ziada, Bahati, and Maji...IMG_20200910_110823.jpgIMG_20200910_110732.jpgIMG_20200910_110701.jpgIMG_20200910_110636.jpgIMG_20200901_112115.jpgIMG_20200901_112036.jpg

I have pancakes, Hermann's and Marginated from Dave. His animals are top notch.

The eight Pancakes I purchased from Dave have been my favorite tortoises I have owned. They remind me of a cross between a tortoise and an Egernia Stokessi. There is something to be said about reptiles that live in groups.

Have you noticed any bullying in the pancake groups?

I love that even as hatchlings the pancakes will devour cactus. I mean take down pad after pad. Many of my other tortoises sort of ease into eating cactus.

No bullying that I have noticed. Some are more shy than others and all have their favorite hiding place, which there are plenty available to them. They are certainly an awesome species, very different from the many Greeks that I have. I'm working on their permanent outdoor enclosure which will be finished this winter and they will move outside next Spring.
