Well, I had just finished soaking and applying a bit of coconut oil. I thought Billie looked nice - along with the others in the yard. He obviously had different ideas of the perfect look.

The pot in front of him had a nice cactus yesterday that he decided to knock over and eat!

They love to soak in mud and will sit there for an hour or more.

Beautiful set-up, Mark. The tortoises look good as well.

What are those taller and more green bushes in the second picture?

How old and big is the one in the pic? Have you weighed him lately?

Bill:

Those are rosemary bushes. A go-to bush for cover in a tortoise enclosures for me. They grow really fast, and quickly develop study woody bases. All my tortoises don't like to eat it - yet tortoise safe (though we have plenty to use for cooking!) One of the few good shade/cover plants a large tortoise will not destroy.

I do weigh all my tortoises monthly. Billy (pictured in the post you are referring to) was 4700g July 1st. My largest - Darwin - (below with Brenda) who turned 2 on May 1st weighed 8546g July 1st.

Thanks for the info, Mark.

I thought that's what they were, but they look so large I had to make sure. I agree they are good cover. I have one here myself as a matter of fact. I had a couple others, too, but my biggest tortoises (adult radiata and yniphora) broke them off using them as scratching posts. After those broke, I started using various spirea and fountain grasses which also worked very well and the tortoises couldn't seem to destroy them.

Thanks. Those sizes and the pic of Darwin make more sense.
Billy just looked so big, young/sub adult, but the mud pit didnt look big enough for a youth adult. Pictures can be so deceiving. They look great.
