Hi,

I purchased a russian tortoise around 2 years old from an exotic specialist store.

I was originally told that he was a male however, i have taken him for a check up at a vet today which has an exotic specialist department and they have informed me that he is in fact a female.

Could anyone please assist me and help me determine if my tortoise is a male or female from the pictures i have attached.

Thanks,

2 years ago would have been impossible to visually identify gender. Even now this tort is still too young to confirm.... but looking like a female if I had to guess

ID agree. I would say Female. Just by really examining and knowing the shape of the tail It definitely has a female appearance.

She will easily get anywhere from 6-9 inches or more. Males generally stay smaller.

As a couple of us have mentioned. Too young to sex 100% as they all look female in the beginning and won't appear as Male until older. 2 or 3 years unless it's a Male and flashes you.
Don't count on the too early of guesses yet.

Ok thank you. The tortoise is around 3 and half years old now. Is that still too early to tell?

Yes, however its likely will be female as it does look now. But could still change within next couple years. Also improper care will make it mature slower.
Don't know its care before you or with you, but if it hasn't been the best its suppose to be, that could play a part in its maturity rate.
